A quick trip to the river this weekend has me fired up for the coming season — conditions are shaping up to be fantastic this spring!

Rising flows through the river system have moved the fish around to new feeding zones, and the fishing below Murphy Dam has been exceptional. The big ones are actively moving and looking to feed, making this one of the best times of year to target a trophy brown or rainbow trout.

Heavy flows out of 2nd CT Lake are setting the stage for a fantastic salmon run. Water temps on Saturday were still a touch low at 37–38 degrees — just below what we like to see to get the smelt moving — but it won’t be long before conditions are perfect.

Streamers and nymphs were the ticket this weekend. Think junk flies and smelt patterns and you’ll be in great shape.

I still have some early season availability, with prime salmon dates open in early May. And if trout and salmon aren’t your thing, the pike fishing is going to heat up fast.

Reach out soon to get in on the action — this is shaping up to be one of the best springs we’ve seen in years.

While waiting for open water and steady flows on the Upper CT in Pittsburg, I guess I’ll spend some time casting between the other kinds of “bergs.”
Things are lining up for some great May fishing!

Whether you’re looking for a trout/salmon trip or some pike and bass fishing, please reach out soon. If all things align, we can target all those species in one trip.

When the green beers start flowing, spring fishing can’t be far behind. We’ve been getting a lot of calls lately about salmon, trout, and pike trips — and the spring calendar is filling up fast. If you’ve been thinking about getting out on the water this April, May, or June, now’s the time to lock something in!

May is shaping up to be especially good this year — one of the better snowpacks we’ve seen in recent memory means prime water conditions. Whether you want to swing streamers for salmon, throw some meaty flies at pike, or dial in your nymphing game, we’ve got you covered. The occasional early season hatch isn’t out of the cards either.

The wind pushed us to some different spots yesterday, but we still found willing pike and a few ambitious fallfish ready to play.

As trout season winds down, the fall pike bite is just heating up. If you want to target NH/VT’s biggest freshwater predator, now’s the time—reach out soon

Jared and I had an awesome day on the water, he started with the Pittsburgh Cycle by 9:30 am (all 3 trout species plus a landlocked salmon), then capped it off with a brown trout hat trick—one on a nymph, one on a dry fly, and the final dandy on a streamer with the car literally in sight.

His yearly tradition continues: landing the big one in those final moments when you think the day is done. Some anglers just have that clutch gene!

Can’t wait until next year!

Had a lot of inquiries about this sighting on the river yesterday. As Tom was walking the bank to get to the river, he stumbled upon quite a rare sight.

From what I understand, this guy has a genetic mutation called axanthism (please correct me if you know anything about this) which doesn’t allow them to produce the cells that cause yellow pigment, making the blue cells predominant. Normally the blues and yellows make them green.

Supposedly a 1 in a million frog in New England.

Maybe that’s where the brown trout get their blue cheeks 🧐

When you’re walking the river and see Big Al wading down the best thing you can do is just watch.

I targeted this same fish for 10 minutes and I got 2 eats but no hookups. I continued down river and got another eat but the eats were slight.

Walked back up river and sure enough Al saw the same rise. I watched 2 drifts slightly short of where the fish was eating and then finally Al made the right cast and drift.

Such fun watching big trout eat from up on the bank.

Tony with a dinger to end the float. A slow day turned hectic right at the end. Water temps were creeping up all day and there were plenty of bugs around but it took some time for the fish to go after them.

You’re probably sick of hearing it from me but ultra premium fluorocarbon is unbeatable. We landed this fish in very fast water after chasing it down rapids for over ten minutes on 6x tippet. They have truly changed the light tippet game.

Despite the potential for a snow storm, I’ve fully shifted into spring mode, which has given me time to reflect on an up and down winter of fishing. Long, harsh cold spells and a torn hamstring kept me off the water for most of January and February, but when I did manage to get out, the fish were generally cooperative.

The highlight of my winter season came during one of my last trips, when Brian landed an absolutely massive brown trout.

It was a “biggun” in every sense of the word.

Catching a fish of this caliber is impressive anywhere in the world, but doing so on small fly with 3-pound tippet elevates the achievement to another level.

We had been fishing for 4-5 hours with only one bite to show for our efforts. Pretty dejected and nearly ready to call it a night, we decided to make one last trek down river—a decision we would soon celebrate. As we approached the run, I noticed a significant swirl downstream. Midges were hatching throughout the evening, so there was only one thing to do really.

We quickly adapted, tying a trailer fly behind our streamer and repositioned about 30 feet downstream. Brian, using my rig, executed a perfect cast, placing the fly about 5 feet above where I had seen the initial swirl.

Moments after the fly touched the water, the line went tight, and the battle began.
I can’t overstate the importance of my 6x ultra secret fluorocarbon—it’s the most crucial tool in my fishing arsenal. The ability to confidently maneuver a fish of this size using such a thin line is truly remarkable. Anglers who haven’t discovered this line might be missing out on the catch of a lifetime.

Brian and I are already dreaming of tracking down that monster brown again this spring or summer. Maybe we’ll catch him lazily sipping midges once again, but this time without the winter hats and layers of thermal gear weighing us down.

A stunning specimen landed by last week swinging a streamer.

We’re now reaching that critical point in the season up north where snowmelt begins and dam flows will start dropping significantly (a process already underway).

If you’re hoping to land a trophy like this, don’t delay - reach out soon. As water levels continue to fall, fishing conditions will become increasingly challenging but you still can be handsomely rewarded.
