Snake season is here at Lake Piru 🐍

As temperatures rise, snakes become more active throughout the park and may be seen sunning on trails, near rocks, or around campsites and shoreline areas.

Visitors may encounter Southern Pacific rattlesnakes and harmless Pacific gopher snakes. Knowing the difference helps protect local wildlife while keeping visitors safe.

If you encounter a snake:
- Never approach or handle it
- Give it plenty of space and allow it to move away
- Keep pets and children nearby
- Notify Park Rangers if posing a safety concern

Swipe through for a quick guide to two common snakes found around Lake Piru.

Juan José Fustero was the last known Indigenous resident of the Piru Canyon region and a remarkable witness to California history 🌄

Born around 1841 in the Piru Canyon area, he lived through the Mexican Rancho era and early American settlement, carrying with him the knowledge, traditions, and history of his people through generations of change.

A member of the Tataviam people with Kitanemuk ancestry, Fustero remained deeply connected to the Piru Canyon region throughout his life. He later worked at Rancho Camulos, a historic ranch in the Santa Clara Valley, where his presence and knowledge became part of the area's evolving history.

Today, a monument and plaque honoring Juan José Fustero can be found along Pothole Trailhead Road, recognizing the Indigenous heritage and enduring history ties to the Piru Canyon region.

Beyond the shoreline of Lake Piru, Middle Piru Creek winds through Piru Canyon on its way downstream💧

Originating in the Tehachapi Mountains within the Los Padres National Forest, the creek travels more than 50 miles and serves as the primary source of water for Lake Piru!

Piru Canyon Road is open to the public up to the Pothole Trailhead, offering beautiful views of the canyon and surrounding landscape.

Remember to remain on designated routes and respect posted closures to help protect habitat areas.

Two birds, one food source, and an entire ecosystem shaped by both!🪶

Acorn Woodpeckers and California scrub-jays are closely tied to oak woodlands like those around Lake Piru, where acorns are a primary source of food.

Woodpeckers store acorns in tree trunks, creating large "granaries", while scrub-jays bury them in ground for later.

Not all of these acorns are recovered. Over time, those forgotten allow for new oak trees to grow and help sustain the landscape over time.
