Garbry Big Woods Reserve is a great place for group outings, fishing and hiking and the trying your skills on the new archery range. The Reserve provides three picnic shelters, which can be reserved by calling the Park District office. There are mowed areas around the shelters that can be used for games, picnicking and lounging. An educational arboretum is located on south of the picnic shelters.

This arboretum contains a variety of native Ohio trees and gives the public a chance to learn about native trees by leaf, bud or bark. There is also a stocked fishing pond that requires no fishing license. Don’t forget to explore the 2.2 miles of hiking trail. In keeping with the Park District’s mission of environmental protection, the restroom facility is one of the first of its kind in the state of Ohio that utilizes wetland as its sanitary filtration system. Wetlands are known for their filtering and purification ability. The Ohio EPA, as well as other groups in the state are interested in this wetland application for sanitation use. To broaden your experience and to help protect this unique natural site, please use the pathways provided and please obey the rules of the Reserve. Activities

Archery Range at Garbry Big Woods Reserve's friendly reminder: Broadheads are NOT allowed at the archery range. They damage the foam targets, which we’ve just replaced—and unfortunately, they’re already ruined again. The range is free and open for everyone to enjoy, so please help us keep it in great condition.

Nobody wants to be a victim of crime, but if you leave your purse, computer, tools or other valuable items in your auto, you’re increasing the risk that you will become a theft-from-vehicle victim.

Police report that most thefts from vehicles are the result of people leaving their car doors unlocked or leaving items of value in the car where would-be thieves can easily spot them. The message-if thieves can see it, they will steal it.

By simply locking the doors of your vehicle and by taking valuable items with you or hiding them in a locked trunk, you can dramatically reduce the risk of being a crime victim.

We have a new self-led program that we hope will get you in the parks for an adventure, a scavenger hunt I guess you could say. In addition to the challenge, you will have a chance to win a $50 gift card each week from a local restaurant thanks to our VIPs (Volunteers in Parks).

The restaurants are The Caroline, Basil's on Market - Troy, OH and El Sombrero. These are some GREAT places to eat and they are always supportive of our programs.

Be the first to receive the clues and details by registering at
https://miamicountyparks.recdesk.com/Community/Program/Detail?programId=791.

We also strongly urge you to follow our "nutty" squirrel Sebastian on his page Sebastian the Selfie Squirrel. You will be able to follow him on his adventures throughout Miami County and maybe even learn some things along the way! Have fun and good luck!

Time Hop Tuesday
In January of 1981, J. Scott Garbry and his family of Piqua deeded 100 acres of land on Statler Road to the Miami County Park District. Prior to this time, the “Big Woods” had been under the stewardship of the Garbry family for over 130 years. Thanks to their generosity, people can visit Garbry Big Woods Sanctuary where they are greeted by nearly a mile of boardwalk which travels through an undisturbed wet beech-maple forest, vernal pools and prolific display of spring wildflowers.
