If you or someone you know is a fly fishing beginner or simply curious about how to get started, please pass this post along. This section of our webpage OnlyOnFlies.com is especially for the beginner. For most, learning to fly cast is the biggest issue. We provide a practical approach to fly casting.

When learning to fly cast, there are several approaches. The best is to find a highly qualified casting instructor. If that is not possible, we show you an organized method that has proven successful over many years. In addition to articles and discussion, we utilize numerous videos that have been chosen for their quality in both production and the quality of the instruction. Becoming a proficient fly caster requires a plan and a good deal of practice. Let us help get you started!

I would like to commend Scientific Anglers for their recent announcement “Introducing Our New Paper Board Spools”. When I started seriously fly fishing in the mid 70’s, there were just three companies that made quality fly lines...Cortland, Scientific Anglers (SA) and Orvis. Today there are close to a dozen manufacturers of quality fly lines and dozens more “wannabes”...many in East Asia. SA is actually doing several things as stated in the announcement (1) all tapered leaders will be packaged in 100% biodegradable packaging and they are providing bulk leader displays to dealers “to sell leaders without individual packaging” and (2) SA is transitioning to “single-piece, recyclable paper board spool in our fly line cartons”. As they state in the release, “Every plastic spool contains the same amount of plastic as two 5 weight fly lines”.

As fly fishers, we have many quality choices when purchasing the products we use. It is important that one of the primary considerations when spending your hard earned dollars is a company's demonstrated commitment to protecting our environment. SA has again proven its innovative nature and I hope that many other manufacturers in the industry will follow suit. For too long, plastics have been a cheap and convenient source of packaging materials. It is well past time for that practice to end. I hope you will consider SA when purchasing your next fly line.

If helping to protect our environment is not enough, SA has been making quality fly lines in the USA since 1945 and was the first to make a plastic-coated tapered fly line to replace the silk fly lines of the past.

Over the years, I have taught quite a few people to fly cast. It has become apparent that way too many beginners just go to YouTube...watch a few videos and become instant fly fishers. Well, if you cannot properly cast a fly rod, I believe most beginners are doomed to a frustrating experience at best. I decided to include a section on "Beginning to Fly Fish?" on my website www.onlyonflies.com. Several of my fly fishing friends and I all think that this new section will be very helpful to those who want to begin fly fishing. If you or someone you know is a beginner and needs to learn to cast a fly rod, I hope you will pass this along to them. I also welcome comments from more experienced fly fishers. These days when everyone can be a "hero" with a smartphone and a fly rod, it is important to note that there are some real HEROES in the fly fishing world. Here is one of mine...Peter Moyle has done more for cold water fisheries conservation in California and surrounding states than many conservation groups. Well, it is 2020...OnlyOnFlies.com has eaten up all my time the last half of 2019. Between updates, adding content and going nuts trying to get the site properly formatted for mobile devices, OnlyOnflies.com is finally ready for an official roll out!
