As a gym owner and coach with over two decades of experience, I have witnessed countless individuals who come in every January with resolutions to improve their health and fitness. However, I have also seen many of them struggle and eventually give up on their goals before March. Through my own personal experiences and interactions with clients, I have come to realize that traditional resolutions often set people up for failure.
Resolutions tend to be rigid and externally driven, based on societal pressures and ideals. They often focus on what individuals feel they lack or need to fix about themselves. This approach can lead to feelings of negativity and self-judgment when those goals are not achieved. Instead, I believe in promoting a more holistic approach to health that encompasses both physical and mental well-being.
Rather than solely focusing on achieving a specific weight or body shape, I encourage my clients and people that I influence to prioritize their overall health. This includes not only physical fitness but also mental and emotional well-being. It's about finding a balance that works for each individual and promotes long-term sustainability.
One key aspect of this holistic approach is shifting the focus towards activities that stimulate happiness and promote hormonal balance. I have found that when individuals engage in activities that genuinely bring them joy and fulfillment, they are more likely to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This could include anything from Pickle Ball, dancing, surfing, hiking, or participating in team sports to practicing mindfulness or engaging in creative outlets like art and music.
Another important aspect is embracing balance and moderation. All-or-nothing resolutions often lead to burnout or feelings of deprivation. Instead, I encourage people to find a middle ground that allows for indulgences while still maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This may involve adopting sustainable eating habits, incorporating regular physical activity into their routines, and prioritizing self-care.
In fact, I challenge everyone to make a resolution to not make one. By letting go of the pressure and expectations associated with traditional resolutions, individuals can focus on creating true success by consistently making choices that align with their overall well-being.
Overall, I strive to guide people towards a healthier lifestyle that goes beyond superficial resolutions. By promoting a holistic approach to health, emphasizing balance and self-care, and encouraging self-compassion, individuals can create lasting and meaningful change in their lives.
