The Current Report; that was one “tuff” season, very little snow, above average temps, it really didn’t seem like winter most of it. I would like to sincerely, thank everyone that did hunt this season, I call you, “Hell or high water hunters”. Meaning that you are willing to hunt in the face of adversity with the attitude of it’s about more than a limit of birds. I am grateful for your spirit and willingness to give it a go anyway.

I feel very lucky to do what I do and hope to continue until I no longer can. I was thrilled, friend and neighbor Terrance Etzkorn had a great day to end his season, way to go Terry!!!

One can always look at the bright side, the heating bill was low and there’s another season right around the corner, be here before you know it. Have a great off-season everyone and be safe until we hunt again!!!

Clint & Austin Moore, Jeff Mott and Tom Peterson were in the house today. 95 % of the birds were lessor Canada’s that were less than cooperative as they choose to be high shy and had little to no interest in decoys.

There’s was never a dull moment as right jabs & left hooks were flying up and down the pit all day.
They continued right up to photo time as you can see. Thanks for the day gentlemen, I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time.

That was a great day on the Prairie with veteran DGC hunters, Tim Amy, Collin and Paul Borgmann. We shot a few in the morning, we shot a few in the afternoon, I really enjoyed the day fellas, let’s do it again in the future someday.

The Current Report; it seems to get late fast when you get out of the field after 6, clean a few birds, feed the dogs & kick your boots off to post up for the day.
There are birds in this sector, lots of them, you name it ducks, spec’s, snows, squeakers, honkers, and also watched a sawn today as well.
85% of them are lessor Canada geese (squeaker's) and they put on quite a show. You never know when they will decide to decoy, that’s what make it fun to me.

It was a beautiful day in central South Dakota for Craig Porosky and Brad Katz. We shot a couple in the morning on what I will call a light flight for the last couple days. We gave a few birds a free pass this afternoon in hopes of drawing the flocks closer.

At sunset I released the hounds, Chip went to the place a bird had dropped and picked up the scent. He dropped his head and took off on a high-speed track for 400 yards to the creek; the second time I’ve seen him do that this season. I’ve been told a good dog is worth his weight in gold, good job Chipper. He’s officially a goose dog.

Unseasonably warm weather definitely has them on the move.
The flights have been impressive to watch, but once they decide where they are going to feed is when it really gets impressive. They haven’t been easy to decoy so far for me, but I think that will change soon. A little wind would help the situation.

The current report, with above average temps, the river has opened up
down to the pocket as of today. There are definitely new arrivals coming out of the south. That’s what I was hoping for to close out this season next week.

Audi Braun, Riley, Cody, Bernell, Avery, Jacob, & Dalton Lee, and Hayden Liebl, we’re in the house today. They came under the pretense of we “might shoot some & we might not”.
They also came in usual form with crock pots & coolers in tow and settled in for the day. Midafternoon they were given a chance (not a great one) and capitalized on it. Nice shooting when it counted, I’ve never had a bad day with this crew even when we didn't pull a trigger. Thanks for the effort, everyone.

I took a little road trip this morning to gather some Intel and a few provisions. There are birds in the usual places around town and in the tail race, just not a lot of them in my humble opinion.

I’ve been telling hunters the days are getting longer, 1st of February the birds will be thinking about nest building and such. If you would still like to bag a goose this season book your hunt the last week of this season. (9th-15th)
Without any meaningful snow on the ground, and above average temps forecast, the odds we will see birds arriving out of the south are pretty good. A lot can happen between now and then, only time will tell.

The Current Report; With subzero windchills for the past 48 hours this has been my view of the field while I have held this recliner down.
The river is locked up to Pierre by now (I assume) and that is where I would expect to find the birds right now. All I can tell you is I haven’t seen any activity from my viewpoint lately.

The goose gods were smiling upon me tonight. I have to be honest about how this one went down.
It was cold and the wind was blowing out of the north 15-25.
I was on my bucket, covered up, giving the dogs treats, when I heard the honks. I peeked out just as they were cupping up, I didn’t do a thing other than stand up and pull the trigger. I’d rather be lucky than good any day!!!
