I communicate often with the parents of the athletes I coach, and occasionally, one of them will feel the need to confide in me that their child is having difficulty with one or more of their peers. This conversation is absolutely acceptable, as it will help me to coach their child better knowing that they are being bullied/picked on outside of the gym, and it's negatively affecting their confidence. It breaks my heart when I hear about the way these young ladies treat each other. I'm not a parent yet, but I would definitely teach my kids that the world can be a cruel place, so they need to learn how to have thick skin and not worry about what others think. That said, above all else, they should treat everyone with respect, regardless of how they are being treated by them. If everyone lived by the golden rule, the world would be a much better place.
