I made this short video to explain something I've been trying to put into words for a while: why meditation—even decades of it—doesn't always reach the relational patterns that shape our lives.

Many of you already know this from the inside. You've done the work, sat the retreats, seen your patterns with real clarity—and still found yourselves caught in them.

This video walks through what I learned in my own practice, and what became the Integrated Meditation Program: bringing meditation together with relational and attachment-based practices, so the parts of us that don't easily shift through solitary practice have room to change.

If this speaks to your own experience, I'm offering a free online introduction to IMP on September 13, where you can learn more, ask questions, and feel the approach for yourself.

Nearly five decades of meditation practice, and one question keeps growing more important to me:

"Why can we have a deep and committed meditation practice—and still find ourselves caught in patterns that meditation alone doesn't seem to shift?"

That question sits at the heart of the Integrated Meditation Program (IMP).

IMP brings meditation together with relational practices—cultivating safety, attunement, comfort, delight, and encouragement—the conditions that allow parts of us that don't easily change through solitary practice to begin to soften and reorganize.

Something interesting happened with our first cohort: experienced meditators showed a statistically significant increase in measured mindfulness over the six months of the program.

This Sunday, September 13, I'm hosting a free introductory class on Zoom. I'll talk about where meditation works, where it has limits, and what becomes possible when relational and attachment-based practices join the contemplative path.

We'll also do a short practice together, so you can feel the approach firsthand, and leave time for your questions.

If this question touches something in your own practice, I'd love for you to join me.

Heartbreak and Prayers for Nepal

Nepal has held a piece of my heart since I was there in the 80’s. The day I flew out of the country, I watched a double rainbow arc over the mountains. That image has stayed with me — and it’s the one I keep returning to now, as I watch the news of these floods.

For those who died — may this rainbow carry you gently onward.

For the families and friends who remain, grieving loss that came without warning — may you be held in love and compassion.

I feel the heartbreak of watching leaders here and around the world choose oil and money over life, over interconnection, again and again. And the grief of seeing how the people who’ve done the least to cause this crisis are the ones standing directly in its path.

May our grief sharpen our resolve to protect this fragile Earth as climate chaos keeps unfolding.

May it influence what we buy, how we travel, how we vote, our engagement locally and globally.

May those who died be at peace.
May those who grieve be held.
May all beings be safe.

Hawksbill hatchlings can't dig their way out of the sand alone. It takes the collective movement of the whole nest — each one shifting, sensing the others — before any of them can rise.

Scientists say they have no language. But they sense each other's movement, and somehow emerge already oriented toward the ocean.

I think we're not so different. We're shaped by the movements of the people around us, whether we notice it or not. When one person touches something true, it doesn't stay contained — it radiates. It touches the people near them. And then the people near those people.

Awakening was never a solitary act. It's collective, the way this nest is collective.

Who are you beneath the identities you've inherited?

Most of us spend our lives becoming someone.

A good daughter.
A successful professional.
A spiritual seeker.
A caregiver.
An activist.
A partner.
A survivor.

Some of these identities are deeply true. Others grew out of our need to belong, to stay safe, or to make sense of our lives.

This week in Meditation & Inquiry, we'll explore the theme of Identity.

Not by trying to get rid of who we are, but by becoming curious about what lies beneath the stories, roles, and assumptions we've come to call "me."

Through guided meditation, inquiry, and shared exploration, we'll investigate how awareness can help us relate to identity with greater freedom, authenticity, and compassion.

If you missed last week's session on Relationship—how to stay connected to another person without losing yourself—you can watch it here:

Tonight's theme: Relationship

How do we stay connected to ourselves while remaining connected to another?

Many of us learned that relationship required losing ourselves — accommodating, withdrawing, fixing, pleasing, or disappearing in order to maintain connection.

Tonight we'll explore what supports authentic relationship:

✨ Attunement
✨ Boundaries
✨ Co-regulation
✨ Staying connected to ourselves in the presence of another

Through the complementary practices of meditation and inquiry, we'll explore what decreases our capacity for relationship and what helps us remain present, connected, and true to ourselves.

Meditation cultivates awareness. Inquiry cultivates understanding. Together they create the conditions for transformation.
