Thank you ,sponsors & volunteers for last weekends Event #3, wrapping up the regular season for this local series.
We came into the final event leading in team of the year points, thanks to our fortunate 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the prior tournaments.
Earlier in the year, we focused on fishing structure with hair jigs, consistently landing bites with a large average size around 26"-27". This success placed us in the top 3 in the previous tournaments.
As summer went on, life got busy, and we didn’t spend much time pre-fishing for event #3. On Thursday before the tournament, we took off work and headed north for a day of practice. Shortly after launching, our motor alarm sounded, forcing us to return to port. After a trip to the hardware store and some DIY repairs, we were back on the water by 3 PM for a few hours of finding graphing schools of fish with a solid size.
On Friday, we practiced away from our Thursday port, hoping the fish stayed put for the tournament. Launching 20 miles from our previous spot, we sought a different pattern but ended up reverting back to Thursday’s pattern, expanding our spots and confirming decent size fish.
Tournament day on Saturday, we had a plan with 5 locations holding decent fish. Starting at spot A, we immediately noticed different fish on our electronics. With no fish until 11:30 and on spot E, we finally hooked a beautiful 24.5" walleye. Not the size we hoped for, but a start. After cycling through 20 rods and various lures, we moved half a mile and sniped two more walleye, 24" and 22". Confident, we aimed for a full five fish limit. By 1:30 PM, we landed another fish and finally secured our fifth fish with 15 minutes to spare, at 2:45, another 24" walleye.
Knowing we needed a full card of 5 fish to even stay in contention for top 25 Team of the Year Race, we were thrilled to secure 2nd place Team of The Year for the Duck Creek Series on Green Bay with our sub-par 35th finish.
To top it off, we fished on Sunday after the tournament for redemption, striking a homerun with two fish over 28.5" and five over 27" from 2-5 PM. Green Bay is truly an amazing and challenging fishery.
