Kudzu- sometimes referred to as the w**d that ate the South. While it can make our 60 foot trees look like topiaries, it is currently quite a blessing. We have not seen rain in weeks and the pastures are just about bare. Turns out kudzu is very high in protein. So twice a day we head to the very edge of the property and yank down enough vines to fill the Gator. I am thankful for this "w**d" that is currently sustaining our cattle!

Next year's basil plants! When your basil goes to flower, leave the flower heads on one plant to collect next year's seed. The tiny black seeds form inside little pockets under the flowers. There are multiple ways to collect them as they dry and every plant gives a ton so share with friends and they, too, can have their own plants next year!

Two reasons I love late summer/fall gardening... most of the heat and the bugs are gone! It's not too late in most climates to get in some greens, carrots, turnips, and other cool weather crops. Give them at least six weeks before your first frost date and most will even take a light frost.
These are our yardlong beans and zucchini plants I started 4 weeks ago. They germinated in 4 days, are thriving and there has been less heat pressure and absolutely no borers. These will both carry through to the first frost and produce abundantly.

Come join us! My oldest daughter who used to do spinning presentations at a living history farm when she was younger will be dusting off her skills and showing you the basics to get you started. The wool from some of our sheep is washed and ready...and she will show you how to take it from there!

We have a big banana tree in our food forest which, considering our climate, will probably never produce a banana. But it is fun to look at and a few times a year we do a banana leaf dinner.

Cut large slices of the leaves, wrap up meat or veggies, and either tie with a smaller strip of banana leaf or turn the packet over so the flaps are down and won't open in the oven. We bake ours at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes or until the meat is done. You can open them up (carefully!) and everyone can assemble what they want and add sauces for extra flavor. It is yum!

Truly, we have a lot of leaves, so if you live in the area and want to try this, give us a call and stop by to grab a few.

Our oldest daughter will be teaching this free event. I am supplying the washed wool from our sheep...and she is taking it from there! Come learn some of the beginning techniques that turn a fleece into yarn.

FIRST SUNDAY FREE EVENT AT ASHTABULA (2725 Old Greenville HWY, Central)
Sept. 6-FREE spinning demo and presentation
1 PM - 2 PM. Teasing, carding, and spinning wool. Participants will be able to practice each step.

If interested, a tour of the house is available after this event. $10 adults, $5 ages 5-18. Cash or check only, please.

A few weeks ago we hosted our annual July 13th. 5K. It is a doozy of a course, but you feel very proud of yourself after! (Winning time was under 30 minutes, wow!)

The 1 1/2 mile loop course is open year round and doubles as our nature trail. Give us a call if you ever want to schedule a formal 5K for some friends or if you just want a peaceful hike to enjoy plants and animals.

One trail, two very different experiences!
