Waking up in the hotel room, knowing it was freezing outside, was glorious!! We had hot coffwe again and were able to heat up our bacon for breakfast instead of eating it straight from the package like we had done the past few days. Our shuttle driver picked us up, took us across the street to Table Rock State Park where we dropped our heavy backpacks at the truck so we could just carry a day pack for a few snacks and water filters. The climb up Sassafras and later the climb up Pinnacle Mountain were the hardest sections of the day...but once we made it up Pinnacle, I was PUMPED!! We were going to finish that day...my redemption hike was coming to an end!

I'd love to hike the trail again, but this time in late summer, early fall when the days are warm enough to swim but the nights are cool enough to be comfortable...and a swim before bed means there's a less chance we'll smell like fritoes! 👀

We finished at about 6:15PM...in the dark, of course...but we finished and I'm glad we did! It was an amazing week and journey. 🥾

After finishing we found a Waffle House...I ate two chicken breast patties, Joseph ate two beef patties, and we each had four eggs each. We also orderd two more chicken and beef patties each to eat after our NYE celebration at Carowinds!

It was an amazing week, surrounded by God's beautiful creation, some tough times, but mostly filled with good times surrounded by great friends that we don't get to see often enough.

Hover & Hurricane are looking forward to more adventures in 2026! Happy New Year!

Getting out of that warm, cozy hammock in 22° cold and putting on frozen socks made for a MISERABLE morning. I wanted to quit so bad! I was so cold, I almost got physically sick...and we had to start the morning with "Heartbreak Ridge", lucky us...

I decided I would NOT wake up to another cold morning like that again...I knew our plan was to hike up Sassafras Mountain but I considered quitting just to avoid the cold...I hate cold weather y'all.. with a passion. I didn't know how to tell my husband I wasn't going to finish this trail, after we were so close to finishing. I didn't want to quit the hike, but I just could. not. do. it.

I finally decided I definitely did not want to quit, so I started thinking of a plan that would allow me to finish but not need to wake up and put on frozen socks 😂 My original plan was for us to hike through the night to finish the trail but I knew we were already exhausted and that probably wasn't a great idea. I didn't have a signal for voice calls, but I did have a satellite signal for texting. I was able to book us a room at Table Rock Inn for the evening and a shuttle there from the parking lot all via texting. Shuttle was scheduled for 7PM, we made it at 7:05PM. It was already freezing, I was thankful I wouldn't be waking up in that cold again!

We checked into the hotel and had hot wings delivered via Uber Eats...two orders of wings cost us $50, they were worth every penny.

Our first morning without hot breakfast and finishing the trail low carb...we missed having a hot meal but we felt good! The weather was getting much colder now and we knew overnight would be cold (around 22°)

We passed the halfway point today!! 🙌

We hiked into Toxaway after dark and there were soooo many people!! Luckily Squatter was already there and offered to let us use trees on her site to hang our hammocks. I was already so cold I couldn't hardly move...Joseph setup my hammock for me, I climbed in, and went to sleep! Luckily, we have great gear and we were warm all night, almost too warm at times but I was thankful for it.

At one point in the evening I put my quilt over my head and smelled "fritoes"...I was wondering why Joseph was eating fritoes and then it hit me that no one was eating anything...I just stunk so bad I smelled myself. I was a bit horrified and a little like I had earned the right...thru hikers stink. At any rate, I didn't cover up my whole head anymore 🤮

Day 3 started with another great breakfast with Fresh Ground! Yep, two more pancakes with maple syrup and zero regrets! 😋 Fresh Ground also called Joseph "Hover" a few more times so "Hover" stuck as his trail name and mine officially became "Hurricane"...if you know me, no explanation is needed 😂 We also met "Squatter" this morning, who would become our Tramily (Trail Family) for the rest of the trip. 🤗

We hiked through White Water and picked up our food cache, that we really didn't need...we took a long lunch break under the picnic shelter at White Water because it was misting rain and starting to get chilly outside. Our view of the falls was horrible but the fog made for some cool views!

We got to camp after dark (again)...night hiking isn't my favorite, especially in technical terrain. The sounds of the nearby waterfalls was amazing, we slept so good!!

Day 2 started with HOT breakfast and coffee with Fresh Ground before hitting the trail...another great weather day!

Confession: I was determined to hike this entire trail low carb...but there was something about hiking to Fresh Ground's fresh blueberry pancakes that I could not deny...I had two, with maple syrup, and zero regrets... 😂 If you've ever had his pancakes, you understand.

The morning of Day 2 was the first time Fresh Ground called Joseph "Hover" because he said he was hovering over me... 🥰 Hubby is always looking out for me.

This section of the trail runs along the Chatooga river and is absolutely beautiful...but it's a tough section in places.

We made it to Fish Hatchery at dark, set up our hammocks, and went straight to sleep. Our breakfast with Fresh Ground the next morning would be our last chance for "trail magic".

Day 1 was the shortest miles...we drove from Anderson to Table Rock State Park where we met with Taz, our shuttle driver. We dropped our halfway food cache and he dropped us off at Oconee State Park. We started hiking around 12:30PM and finished in time to eat dinner with Fresh Ground. The weather was BEAUTIFUL!! We stealth camped in the woods so that we'd be close to Fresh Ground for hot coffee and breakfast the next morning. We only had two chances for breakfast with Fresh Ground and the plan was to "cold soak" our food, including our morning coffee for the rest of the trip.

Sometimes you just need a mental health day...life gets crazy, the noise of the daily grind wears you down...this weekend we took a step back, got in some woods therapy and ended an amazing day of hiking by having dinner with my "baby girl" and her hubby. Such an amazing way to start a new week...
