It might feel crazy busy right now, but in just a few weeks, the holidays will be over and the quiet winter months will be upon us.

A slower pace for most of us artists as we work in the studio and prepare for show season.

The perfect time to tackle a project you’ve been thinking about.

Over the next 5 days, I’ll be showing up here live on IG for a Challenge to pick a project that you can spend the next 8 weeks on during the heart of the winter.

Tune in at 12pmET to the live. There will be tips on choosing a project and a little bit of homework to help you narrow down your ideas.

Imagine what you can accomplish before March rolls around!

We aren’t born being good at sales and marketing.

Those are skills that we learn along the way.

The more we do it, the better we get.

But first, we’ve got to be willing to be a beginner.

You won’t always know what to do, things will feel new, and you’ll feel some doubt.

This is a stage that every artist goes through.

Just like the brand new server at your favorite restaurant who fumbles through the specials and doesn’t have any answers about the menu.

They don’t know what they don’t know yet…and they are freaking out inside…but they have to go through that in order to build their confidence and be good at their job.

Most people want the new server to be successful. And most people want to support you as you learn how to show your work and talk to people about it.

✨ Marketing is helping people experience your art before they buy it.

✨ Selling is helping interested people get to a yes or a no.

2 of the 3 drivers of your art business.

Getting really good at these skills is 100% possible if you are willing to be a beginner while you learn.

This is the stuff that I love helping artists with. You’ve waited a really long time to get your work out there - don’t let anything get in the way of that.

A lot of artists make the mistake of following this path when first starting out:

Studio → Gallery → Sales

But this model can hurt your growth for 2 reasons:

1️⃣ Risky & expensive for galleries – When you’re starting out, galleries are hesitant to take on new artists, which makes it tough to get in.

2️⃣ No real growth – Even if you get in, the gallery controls the audience & relationships. You miss the chance to grow your own business and connect with your collectors.

✨ The solution? ✨

Instead of chasing galleries, focus on becoming the artist that galleries seek out.

Galleries love artists with a proven track record. Artists who:

✅ Make good art consistently
✅ Have demand for their work
✅ Are comfortable talking to people about their art

The key to this? Decide that you’re not just an artist, but a business owner.

You’re the one who gets your art out there. You get to experience the joy of seeing your work connect with people and make a real impact. 🙌

When you go out there, gallery owners will notice you in the crowd. And when they want to partner, you’ll do it from a place of “Let’s see what we can do together”, not “I need them”.

So, ditch that model and focus on this instead:
Studio → Shows → Emails → Sales

This model lets you learn, grow, and build your audience on your own terms while creating a thriving business. 🚀

And when gallery opportunities do come, you’ll be ready to partner on your own terms with confidence.

Only 2% of sales happen on first contact. I call them frosting sales.

They are so fun and exciting when they happen.

But 98% of sales are to people you already know.

And happen in the follow up - sometimes weeks, months, years later.

Shows are for selling to new people of course, but more than that…

they are for meeting new people who will buy later…

and chatting with people we met already that will buy later…

And selling to people you met a long time ago that you built a relationship with and they feel ready to buy now.

Ok artists, are you ready to put all the pricing drama to rest?

I’ve covered all the bases in this 90 minute workshop.

And oh, by the way…it’s totally free.

Because pricing is one of those things that need to be figured out if you want to build a successful business with your art - and I want ALL the artists to lock this down as soon as possible so you can focus on the other stuff.

You’ll leave the workshop with an official price list that will scale with you.

A strategy for raising your prices when the time is right.

A list of common mistakes to avoid with pricing art.

And some strategies to implement when you start to question your prices…to keep you confident and solid in your pricing choices while problem solving the real things holding you back in business.

A workbook will be sent out ahead of the workshop, and a replay will be available for anyone that registers.

You’re not going to want to miss this one!

RSVP via link in bio or comment “pricing” below and I’ll send you the link.

OPOs = Other People’s Opinions

They show up all over the place when we decide to sell our art.

You’ve probably heard them disguised as:

Advice:
“You should paint more Paris pieces. They sell best.”

Facts:
“All the artists I know make money teaching.”

Criticism:
“You’re not cut out for this.”

Rules:
“You need to [use this medium, have this many followers, dress this way…].”

Universal truths:
“Art is a luxury. Most people can’t afford it.”

Here’s the thing:
People mean well.
But OPOs aren’t truth.
And you don’t have to take them on—even if they come from your mom. 🧡

Most of us were nudged away from art long before we even gave it a chance.

Maybe no one said it directly…
But we felt the message loud and clear:

“Are you sure this is a good idea?”

So here’s your reminder:

You’re an artist.
Your art matters.
You can figure it out.
People want what you have.
Your actions create your results.
You’re the example of what’s possible.

And next time someone offers their opinion?

“I hear you. And I’m doing this anyway—because it matters deeply to me.”

You don’t need everyone to understand.
You just need to trust that this path is yours.
And walk it—with or without their support. 🤍

It’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to make art that we *think* people will want to buy vs. the art we really want to make.

Which can have us in the studio wondering how we ended up here making what we are making.

But really, what collectors want is good art.

And good art comes from artists who make art for self expression, to share something meaningful with the world, to process their thoughts and beliefs.

Good art is art that artists make for themselves.

So yeah…maybe we should be making more of the art people want. 😜

I was all set to share a post about having your back about your art…but felt like this needed to be said. ❤️
