A lot of people think the problem with modern dating is that we have too many standards.

I don’t think that’s quite it.

Some people use standards to keep anyone from getting close enough to matter. The list gets longer, the criteria get narrower and nobody ever feels quite right.

Other people do the opposite. They get attached first, see what they hope could be there and start treating potential like evidence.

One protects you from intimacy.

The other gets you deeply invested before you’ve really evaluated what you’re investing in.

Neither one solves the problem.

You need enough maturity and self-knowledge to choose well. Enough openness to encounter the actual person instead of grading them against a fantasy.

And enough judgment to distinguish what marriage can help two people build from what already needs to be there.

You’re not looking for a finished product.
But you do need a viable starting point.

So, which pattern do you recognize in yourself?

A: You screen people out before they can get close.

B: You get attached first, then start investing in who they could become.
Drop A or B in the comments below. And if the honest answer is both, you can say that too.

Wanting to get married and being ready to be married are not the same thing.

And liking someone is not evidence that the relationship is progressing well.

If you’re dating for marriage, your investment should follow the evidence, not outrun it.

Dating for marriage isn’t about finding someone you like enough.

(Obviously you have to like them too, but that’s the easy part)

It’s about whether there’s enough evidence to responsibly build a future with them.

Human beings can imagine a future with almost anybody they become attached to.

The harder question is whether this person has given you enough evidence to responsibly build that future with them.

This is where vetting comes in. It’s relational due diligence before you hand someone access to your future.

If you’re dating for marriage and serious about making better relationship decisions, send me this post in a DM and let’s chat about what’s getting in your way.

Marriage should change you.

It should deepen you, stretch you, expose things you still need to work on, require you to become more patient, more generous, more accountable, more mature…

But “we’ll grow together” can also become a convenient way to excuse things that should have been developed before marriage.

Basic emotional regulation.
Honesty.
The ability to repair.
Responsibility.
Some capacity for self-reflection.
A workable relationship with money.

Enough stability to build a life with another person.

You do not need to arrive finished.

But you do need enough foundation that marriage is refining what is already there, not trying to construct an adult from scratch.

That distinction is essential when you’re deciding who is actually ready for marriage.

What do you think qualifies as the bare minimum skills or qualities needed before someone says I do?

If you’re dating for marriage, don’t wait until you’re deeply attached to start evaluating whether someone is actually a good fit.

Attraction and chemistry matter, but they’re feelings. And marriage decisions require more than feelings.

You need to assess character, relationship capacity, compatibility, patterns, relational risk and let your level of trust, access, investment and commitment follow the evidence.

That’s what vetting for marriage actually is: relational due diligence before you build a future with someone.

Comment “BACKWARDS” if you want the link to my YouTube video explaining this in more detail. I’ll be happy to share it with you.

I think one of the harder parts of vetting someone is actually letting new information change your opinion of them.

It’s easy to keep gathering information when it confirms what you already hoped was true.

The harder part is when you’ve decided someone is wonderful and then they start showing you things that don’t fit.

At that point, you have to ask yourself whether you’re still evaluating the person in front of you or just protecting your preference for the outcome.
