Brick “Bench” Darrow, starting out in the garage of his grandmother’s house, turned Thorbeckes into what it is today. Growing up in the heart of Phoenix, Brick took an interest in weights when they were completely foreign to most people. Having a knack for the bench press, “bench” seemed a worthy nickname as he went on to set records in both the bench press and the incline press. Originally a decorated boxer, and former State champion in the Golden Gloves boxing tournament, Brick helped keep the madness under control (maybe), at JD’s nightclub during the 60’s and 70’s as head of security. Work wasn’t too bad when he had guys like Superstar Billy Graham, Jon Cole, Mike Matousek and Ron Pritchard around. In the 90’s, Brick had opened up another gym location in the west valley, a gym who would later be under the command of current strongman, Jerry Pritchett. With the roots here in Tempe, Brick continues to be the coach, mentor and friend he has been for so long, keeping the Thorbeckes brotherhood running deep.
