Nothing gets wasted in the ocean. A father and son were fishing in Cape Cuvier when they came upon a feeding frenzy of 38 sharks finishing off a dead whale carcass. Tiger Sharks are the main species seen, evidenced by the fearsome stripes on its back. It apparently took almost 3 days for this group of sharks to finish the carcass. The end of the video shows a piece drifting near the beach and a shark almost beaching itself trying to get the last bites.

Off the Norther Hawaiian Islands a new shark species has been identified, the Laila Lanternshark (Etmopterus lailae). Its about the weight of a pineapple and apparently glows in the dark. As a member of the Lanternshark family, it has photopores (light producing organs) on their bodies. It is less than a foot long and weighs under 2 pounds. The Lanternshark was actually discovered 17 years ago but apparently the researches were operating on Island Standard Time.

A glow-in-the-dark shark that has a mouthful of pointy teeth and an impressively large bulbous nose is also quite small — about the weight of a pineapple, according to a new study.

Beach-combing is a really fun activity and you truly never know what you are going to come across. A couple on Hilton Head Island came across an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake as the surf brought it in. That is the most venomous snake in North America. Apparently these snakes do go for swims periodically though I can't imagine too many people have or will ever get to experience this sight.

Blue Whales are the largest animal on the planet and researchers were able to identify and how they decide to feed on a patch of Krill, tiny little organisms that make up the diet of these massive whales. The Blue Whales typically eye a patch of Krill and decide if it is worth it to make a feeding pass. When the whale opens its mouth, this motion acts like a break, slowing the whale down from about 6.6 mph down to 1 mph. It takes a lot of energy to get back up to speed so the krill kill has to be worth it.

Grey Whales are not known to come so close to shore but this juvenile did, likely looking for food in the sand. Amazingly, the swimmers at this California Beach were totally oblivious. Enjoy the video =)

To someone who has a hammer, everything looks like a nail. This fisherman off Australia was attempting to free the juvenile Great White Shark from the netting, since it is a protected species in those waters. The Shark instinctively grabbed the net and started a tug of war battle caught on video. He finally let go after the fisherman let go.

“It just went ballistic and tried to rip the net out of my hands.”

Bait balls are one of the most amazing and rare events to witness in the water. Fish are cornered by several predators both above and below them and each fish fights to get into the middle of the "bait ball" hoping to outlast the appetites of everything diving at them. All kinds of animals come together like Sharks, Seagulls and Dolphins and keep diving into the bait ball for a mouthful of fish, with the event lasting as long as an hour. Astute boat captains will always keep an eye out for a large mass of birds on the surface that are constantly diving into the water. Amazingly these oblivious jet skiers caught this once in a lifetime event not that far off Australia's Gold Coast.

Several years ago a Shark expert was doing a live newscast in knee deep water. On film they managed to capture a Bull Shark biting into his calf and the video is pretty intense.

While the obvious effects of oil spills on the environment are hard to miss, Australian researchers have discovered very damaging secondary effects. With as little as a few drops of oil in the amount of water to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool, fish were found to make very poor decisions. They were akin to being drunk, swimming out into the blue or choosing dead coral for homes. They didn't even respond appropriately to predators, leading to overall decreased rates of survival.

In 1984 a storm in the Atlantic Ocean completely stripped away one of the beaches on Achill Island. For 33 years all that was left was barren rocky shoreline. In May another storm front came through and completely returned the sand to Dooagh Beach on this tiny island off of Ireland. For the next part of the show, the Atlantic will be pulling a series of bunnies out of it's Nor'easter....

Locals at Dooagh, Achill island, had got used to their sandless beach, which storms in 1984 turned into just rocks and pools. But a freak tide at Easter has brought hundreds of tonnes of sand back to the bay off Ireland’s County Mayo coast

While MH370 has still not been found it turns out that researchers have been making several other important discoveries. Aside from mapping the sea floor in one of the most remote regions on the planet, they have now discovered several fishing hotspots for Tuna and Trevally. More importantly they are piecing together movement patterns of the tectonic plates, helping advance our understanding of their geologic formation.
