Locking the block is a MUST if want to have big throws in shot and discus. It may look slightly different in the shot put and the discus, but the concept is the same.
When it’s time to deliver, you don’t want the block side continuing to move. You want it to hit and stick. Once the block stops, the rest of the body can move around it and transfer energy into the implement.
A moving block leaks power. A firm block creates it.
