From spectating as a spouse… to crossing the HYROX finish line as an athlete.
Charles recently raced his first HYROX in Anaheim, and his experience says everything about what’s possible when you show up, train with intention, and trust the process.
Here it is in his own words:
“A bit belated, but ten days ago I raced my first Hyrox. It was the men’s singles open division, in Anaheim. I would have been happy with anything under 2 hours, so 1 hour 49 minutes 15 seconds was fantastic!
Andy, who finished racing around the time that I started, noted that my sled push and lunges were strong, and indeed they were my best movements relative to the field. As expected, I struggled on wall balls, so physical therapy for my shoulder will continue. I can squat!
For the most part, I followed the pacing strategy that I had practiced, especially for the first two-thirds of the race. For example, my burpee broad jumps were steady, with just a few breaks no more than a few breaths long. Race simulations at Full Strength paid off!
I ran faster throughout than I trained for. In the lead up many of you witnessed me practicing a slower 7 minute per kilometer pace, but most of my race day runs were closer to 6 minutes.
By the time lunges came around I was riding some good momentum — but perhaps at the cost of a slower last run.
Phoenix, here I come!”
This is exactly why we do what we do.
HYROX isn’t just for elite racers. It’s for people who commit to training, learn how to pace, work through limitations, and show up anyway. Charles put in the work, trusted the process, and proved that this sport is accessible, motivating, and absolutely worth chasing.
So proud to have you as part of this community, Charles — and excited to see what Phoenix brings next. 💪🔥
