๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿคซ CLASSROOM CHALLENGE: Can your students run a play without saying a word? Football teams have to transfer information quickly. But what happens when players can't rely on normal verbal communication? Turn that problem into STEM. Split students into teams and give them four instructions: โžก๏ธ MOVE RIGHT โฌ…๏ธ MOVE LEFT โธ๏ธ STOP ๐Ÿ”„ CHANGE DIRECTION
Now give them the challenge: Create a code that communicates each instruction WITHOUT speaking. They might use: โœ‹ Hand signals ๐ŸŸฆ Colors ๐Ÿ”ข Numbers ๐Ÿง Body movements ๐Ÿšฉ Symbols
Then put the system to the test. Can another student correctly decode all four messages? Now introduce interference or a new constraint. What happens if students can't see one signal clearly? Can they redesign the system?
๐Ÿ’ก Teacher takeaway: Track both speed AND accuracy. Students may discover that the fastest communication system isn't necessarily the most reliable. That's systems thinking hiding inside football. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Explore sports-based STEM at https://na2.hubs.ly/H07Gvlr0.

๐Ÿ† STEM SUCCESS FRIDAY ๐Ÿ†
Prototype #1: ๐Ÿ’ฅ Didn't work. Now what? โŒ Throw it away? โŒ Tell students the correct answer? โŒ Start an entirely different activity? Or... ๐Ÿ“Š USE THE RESULT. That's where an engineering challenge gets really interesting. Ask students: ๐Ÿ‘€ What happened? ๐Ÿง  Why do you think it happened? ๐Ÿ“ What evidence do you have? โš™๏ธ What ONE thing could you change? ๐Ÿ”„ What do you predict will happen next? Then... Test it again. Now students aren't randomly rebuilding. They're using evidence to improve a solution. ๐Ÿ’ก Teacher takeaway: Try limiting students to changing only one variable between tests. It makes it much easier to discuss whether that specific change affected the outcome. Prototype #1 isn't a failure. It's the starting point for Prototype #2. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Explore hands-on STEM through sports at https://na2.hubs.ly/H07wTmb0.

๐Ÿ”Š๐Ÿ€ What does STEM sound like? It might sound like... ๐Ÿ€ A basketball hitting hardwood. ๐ŸŽพ A racket striking a ball. ๐Ÿ“ฃ A crowd cheering. ๐Ÿ’ A hockey puck hitting the boards. ๐Ÿˆ A quarterback trying to communicate inside a roaring stadium.
Each of those sounds begins with vibration. That vibration transfers energy through the surrounding air as a sound wave until it eventually reaches our ears. But the sound we hear also depends on the source, materials, surrounding surfaces, frequency, amplitude, and environment.
๐Ÿ’ก Try this with students: Ask them to identify five sounds during a sporting event. Then investigate: What is vibrating to create each sound? That one question can turn something students hear every day into an investigation of waves and energy. Our newest blog goes even further with hands-on activities involving sound mapping, stadium design, distance, decibels, and more.

โญ WHAT THEY SAID WEDNESDAY The timer goes off. STEM time is over. And the students respond: โ€œNo, you're kidding me!โ€
That's how educator Sandra Hayes described what happens when her STEM Sports students realize their time is up.
They want to keep going. And we love what that says about hands-on STEM learning. Imagine students working through this week's football engineering challenge:
โœ๏ธ Design a solution. ๐Ÿงฑ Build it. ๐Ÿ’ฅ Test it. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Watch it fail. ๐Ÿ“Š Figure out why. ๐Ÿ”„ Make a change. Then suddenly... โฐ TIME'S UP.
But they're not done thinking. They've already figured out what they want to change. They want to know if their new idea will work. They need one more test.

๐Ÿˆ Football season = STEM season!
Bring the excitement of fantasy football into your classroom with Fantasy Football โ€“ STEM Sports!
Students become the โ€œcoachesโ€ as they:
๐Ÿ“Š Analyze real football statistics
๐Ÿงฎ Practice math skills
๐Ÿค” Make data-driven decisions
๐Ÿค Collaborate and problem-solve
Use it week after week throughout football season for an engaging way to connect sports + math + STEM.
๐Ÿˆ Perfect for grades 3โ€“12!

08/31/2026

๐Ÿˆโš™๏ธ What makes a good protective design? Is it the material? The shape? The thickness? The way the pieces work together? There's only one way for an engineer to find out: TEST IT.
With football season getting underway, challenge your students to think like sports-equipment engineers. Give teams identical materials and ask them to design a protective structure around a model object.
Then: โœ๏ธ Draw the design ๐Ÿงฑ Build it ๐Ÿ“ Establish how you'll measure success ๐Ÿ’ฅ Test it ๐Ÿ“Š Record what happened ๐Ÿ”„ Change ONE variable ๐Ÿ’ฅ Test again
Did the redesign actually perform better? What evidence proves it?

๐Ÿ† STEM SUCCESS FRIDAY ๐Ÿ†
๐ŸŽพ Where should you stand? ๐ŸŽฏ Where should you aim? ๐Ÿ“ What angle connects you to the target? ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ What happens if you move three feet? A tennis activity can start as a geometry lessonโ€”but those questions ask students to do something bigger: Visualize the problem before trying to solve it. Then students can make a prediction, test their idea, measure what happened, and adjust. ๐Ÿ’ก Teacher takeaway: Before students begin your next sports-based STEM challenge, give them 60 seconds to draw what they think will happen. After the experiment, have them revise their drawing based on the evidence. Now students aren't simply finding an answer. They're developing, testing, and revising a model of how they think the system works. That's STEM thinking students can carry into their next challenge. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Explore hands-on STEM through sports at https://na2.hubs.ly/H07pbsv0.

โญ WHAT THEY SAID WEDNESDAY โญ One thing educators consistently notice about sports-based STEM? Students aren't sitting on the sidelines of the learning. They're part of it. Take this week's tennis theme. ๐ŸŽพ Students can physically change their starting position, predict an angle, measure it, test the shot, observe what happens, and try again. ๐Ÿ“ They're learning geometry. ๐Ÿ“ They're practicing measurement. ๐Ÿง  They're solving problems. ๐Ÿค They're collaborating. ๐ŸŽพ And they're moving while they do it.
That's what makes active STEM learning so powerful. Students aren't just hearing that changing position changes an angle.
They can see it happen. ๐Ÿ’ก Teacher takeaway: Give students different roles during your next investigationโ€”player, measurer, recorder, and observer. Rotate the roles and ask how each perspective changed what they noticed about the experiment.
