It all started with BALL. It was my first love…. the first time I directed my full intent and energy into something…. where I first learned that when I put my passion into something I truly care about, I can improve tremendously, even finding success beyond my natural skill level.
I was never a great athlete. Kinda stiff. Not super explosive. Lateral movement could have been better. I even had bad knees before it should have been a thing.
BUT, I have a huge motor, refuse to quit, and have yet to be outworked by anyone at anything ever. I watched tape. I practiced every nuance of the game that I could imagine. I envisioned every conceivable situation on the court and thought about how it could unfold. I sat next to my coach on as many road trips as possible and talked ball until he pretended to fall asleep just to shut me up.
Participating in sports taught me so much……about teamwork, leadership, and communication under duress. Specifically, my experience on the basketball court gave me a starter set of self confidence and resilience-under-any-circumstances that forms the foundation of any success that I’ve achieved over the years - be it in higher education, business, or even self improvement.
I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything.
