Just another Tuesday at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu North Phoenix with over 60 kids on the mat. Happy kids learning and enjoying the art of Jiu-Jitsu while playing the game of BJJ.
Tonight was a stand-up self-defense focused class for our Little Champs (5–8) and Jr. Grapplers (9–12). We started with a short body activation warm-up while integrating breakfalls and other mechanics that would show up later in class. During stretching, we had a quick conversation about respecting other people’s belongings and treating others with respect.
Our technical focus started with sucker punch/slap defense, which transitioned into acquiring the clinch and controlling the bully from the clinch position. We then stress tested that with a short clinch challenge to add some heat and realism to the technique.
From there, we looked at what the challenge exposed — mainly posture and base issues from the bully — and how to capitalize on that by turning it into a takedown opportunity. We briefly reviewed the repeated theme/concept in all our classes of “get on top and stay on top” and finished with side-by-side positional sparring rounds focused on top control, using mount for round one and knee-on-belly for round two. We play these as our “positions of submission” putting a heavy focus on control versus reckless attacking.
To cap the class off, we played a short round of dodgeball.
45 minutes of movement, learning, positional challenges, and fun. Our goal isn’t to create tough fighters or world champions, but to help give kids tools, confidence, and problem-solving skills that better equip them for the inevitable challenges of life.
