🚨Guest Teacher Alert!🚨

Upward Spiral Dance is soooo excited to host a very special guest teacher!! Steven will be taking over Adult Beginner Contemporary on Saturday, Sept 19th at 10am! You DO NOT want to miss this! 🪩💃🕺

Bio:
Steven Redondo is a Phoenix dance artist, incorporating contemporary modern and improvisational elements into his practice. His journey in dance began in high school, pursuing higher education at Arizona State University for a couple of years. Steven’s professional career took off when he started showcasing solo works with [nueBOX] at Experimental Art Nights, along with collaborative works at Phoenix Art Museum. In recent years, he has presented work with Blaktinx Dance Festival in 2019 and 2024, Breaking Ground Contemporary Dance Festival in 2020 and 2025, and NueWorks Dance Festival in 2025.

Teaching:
Steven approaches the class structure with body-friendly warmups and exercises, focusing on feeling over ex*****on. Using improvisational tools, class takers will experience movement exploration and building including minimal partner work. The last half of class will include learning a short choreographed phrase to perform in small groups.

Meet Michaela!

Q: What’s your why for participating in this project?

A: I am participating in Road to Rome because I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the magic of making dance, regardless of their age or experience level. I wanted to open the door to the creative process for people who have never experienced it before, or for those who may be returning to it after many years away. Most importantly, I wanted to create a real performance opportunity for adult beginner dancers, giving them the chance to step into the studio, create something together, and ultimately share their work on an international stage. This project is about proving that it’s never too late to create, to perform, and to dream a little bigger. ✨

Meet Jessie!

Q: What’s your why for participating in this project?

A: I danced growing up and through college. When I started my PhD, I didn’t have the time for it anymore, but I always missed it. I’m so grateful USD has contemporary dance for adults and creates such a welcoming and supportive space. When this opportunity came up, I thought, “why not?” I figured if I love dancing with USD, I’d love performing with them. And I have. Getting to do it in Rome is the part I still can’t believe. Dance transcends language, so it’s a way for all of us to come together over something we share.

Road to Rome: Stories🩰

Meet Alejandra!

Q: What’s your why for participating in this project?

A: My why is really about challenging myself and reconnecting with a part of myself that I don’t want to lose. Coming back to Phoenix after living in Switzerland for a couple of years has been a big transition. I’ve had to rebuild different parts of my life, figure out what I want next, and become comfortable with uncertainty and change.

Dance has always been part of my culture, but over time I also discovered it as a form of personal expression, a way to connect with music, let go, and communicate through movement without necessarily having the words for it. I wanted to participate in this project because I felt like I needed to do something difficult on purpose, something that would push me outside of my comfort zone and remind me of what I’m capable of.

More than anything, I think my why is about choosing myself. Instead of constantly asking whether I’m good enough or whether I belong, I want to create experiences that give me evidence that I can show up, be consistent, learn, grow, and do hard things.

A: I think my ‘why’ is that I just really love dance and all the things it conjures: movement, creative expression, beauty, friendships, community. So when this opportunity arose - to dance with this group of women and build something creative together - I wasn’t going to pass it up!

Q: What’s your why for participating in this project?

A: I am participating in this project for the opportunity not only to perform in Europe (though I’m not upset about that outcome) but I’m also doing this to take part in the creation of a new performance art project. The weekly rehearsal process is a moment in my week where I get to be creative and silly and have fun with 7 other women, and somehow out of that process of play, we are making this cool, wholly original piece of art.
