Let’s talk about tire kickers for a minute because I’m genuinely curious what everyone else is experiencing lately.

We’ve had a huge increase in people inquiring about horses we have available for sale and lease. They ask questions, request videos, talk about coming out to try them, sometimes even make plans to come, and then completely disappear.

The funny thing is, the first person who actually shows up to try one of our horses is usually the person who buys or leases them. I really pride myself on advertising horses accurately. I’m very upfront about what they are, what they aren’t, their quirks, their experience, and what type of rider I think they’ll work for. I don’t want to waste someone else’s time any more than I want mine wasted.

I completely understand changing your mind. Maybe you found another horse. Maybe your situation changed. Maybe you watched the videos again and decided it wasn’t the right fit. That is completely fine! You don’t owe me a purchase or an explanation.

But when did it become so normal to just stop responding?

Especially when someone has taken the time to answer questions, send videos, coordinate schedules, or set aside time for you to come out. A simple “Thank you, but I’m going to pass” is totally fine.

I’m genuinely curious what everyone thinks. Sellers, are you seeing more of this too? And buyers and lessees, what makes people hesitant to just say they’re no longer interested?

I feel like basic communication in the horse world has gotten a little lost lately, and I’d love to hear both sides!

Working Student Position Available – Rebounding Sporthorses

Our wonderful working student is heading off to college, so we are looking for the next great addition to our team.

We are seeking a motivated working student for a 5 days per week position at our farm in Leesburg, VA. At this time housing is not available, this is a part time, 7am-1pm (ish) position (other than horse show days!).

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to further their riding and horsemanship while gaining experience in a professional training program. This opportunity offers at least one lesson per day and riding 2-4 horses on top of that!

Applicants should be comfortable riding a variety of horses, from green prospects to experienced schoolmasters. A background in the hunter/jumper or eventing disciplines is preferred.

Opportunities to compete at horse shows are available for the right rider. Responsibilities include riding, grooming, tacking, general horse care, and assisting with the daily operation of the barn.

One thing I’ve never quite agreed with is when people are shopping for horses is the question, “Is it more go than whoa, or more whoa than go?”

Why does it have to be either?

A well-trained horse should respond appropriately to the rider’s aids. If you ask it to move forward, it should move forward. If you ask it to come back, it should come back. Most importantly, it should stay at the pace you asked for until you tell it otherwise.

Of course, if we’re talking about a true beginner, I completely understand wanting a horse that naturally has a little more “whoa.” Safety matters. But for the average rider, the conversation shouldn’t be about whether a horse has more gas or more brakes. It should be about whether the horse is educated enough to be adjustable.

That’s a big part of how we train our horses. Whether they naturally have a bigger engine or are naturally quieter, they all learn the same expectations. They are expected to respond promptly to the aids, maintain rhythm, and be adjustable without needing constant reminders from the rider. A horse shouldn’t require kicking every stride to keep going, nor should it require hanging on the reins to slow down.

When people ask us if one of our horses is “more go” or “more whoa,” our answer is usually the same: it depends on what you ask. A good horse should meet the rider where they’re at while still responding correctly to the aids.

In our opinion, that’s far more valuable than labeling a horse with one or the other.
