Hello Ascension Wrestling Parents,
Last night, our Novice through 4th Grade group had a great one-hour session focused on fundamentals and building strong habits on the mat.
We started practice by reviewing several core wrestling basics. The wrestlers worked through proper stance and motion, then spent time learning the responsibilities of each position — neutral, bottom, and top. We emphasized staying balanced, moving our feet, and keeping a strong base.
From there, we drilled several fundamental movements that every wrestler needs:
- Sprawls
- Hip heists
- Back bridge and front bridge
These drills help develop body awareness, mat strength, and defensive reactions.
Next, we moved into some spin drills to work on quick movement around an opponent while maintaining control.
During our technique portion, the wrestlers practiced:
- Double leg takedowns from the neutral position
- Single leg takedowns from neutral
- Stand-ups from the bottom position
We finished the session with two live matches, including an overtime period, so the wrestlers could apply what they learned in a live situation and continue building confidence and toughness.
One phrase we use often in the room is “ELBOWS IN YOU WIN! ELBOWS OUT WATCH OUT!.” You may hear your wrestlers repeating it! It’s a simple reminder that helps reinforce good positioning in many situations. Feel free to say it with them throughout the day to keep them thinking like wrestlers. Shout out to **Coach Rich Famularo, Coach Dan Beers, and Coach Bill Bryson of the “Firthtown Boys Club”. **Their influence continues to shape how we teach the sport today.
Thank you for your continued support. The kids worked hard tonight and are improving every practice.
See you on the mat!
