I am working with two senior leaders from the same organization. Here is what I heard:

Leader #1 – “I need to refocus and I have to force myself to let go; I say that every session”

Leader #2- “It’s my turn to let someone learn on their own, it’s just so hard to let go.”

Would you find it surprising that the owners of the organization are controlling micromanagers?

The senior leaders are modeling the behavior they experience from ownership.

It’s a little ironic that the senior leaders want the owners out of their day-to-day.

I asked both senior leaders, how do you think your direct reports feel?

Lightbulb moment.

Break the cycle.

We lead by example. It’s that simple.

"I challenged one of my clients to do something that absolutely terrified them last week.

They’ve been struggling with a massive leadership hurdle: Letting Go.

The challenge? Put their phone on ""Do Not Disturb"" for three whole hours during the workday. No checking emails, no answering slacks, no putting out fires.

The result?

While they were offline, their team stepped up and solved the problems on their own.

My client came back and told me, ""This felt so good, I gotta do this again.""

Micro-managing doesn’t just exhaust you; it accidentally suffocates your team's ability to grow.

When you step back, you give your team the room to step up.

I am working with a SVP in Retail, an amazing person, an amazing story and a great leader.

Why would a great leader want to work with a coach?

Here is what they said:

“I don’t feel like I am in the driver’s seat of my career anymore.”

They are a leader that consistently challenges the status quo.

They are a leader that puts people first, both employees and customers, while balancing the goals and needs of the company.

“The realization has hit that I have always done what’s best for the organization, however I always felt like I was in control- until now.”

Something has changed. It’s certainly not the experience, knowledge, impact or leadership style of the leader that I am coaching.

I label myself as a life-long longer and I love to read. To be honest, it is more for fun than for work.

However, I often come across a book that is full of leadership gems.

“101 Lessons from the Dugout”, by Harley Rotbart, MD & Ken Davidoff is one of those gems. “What Baseball and Softball Can Teach Us About the Game of Life”. Written for a younger audience, I am young at heart, so it resonated quickly.

Here is one of those gems I wanted to share:

“You are the right person at the right time. BELIEVE you can face any challenge, any time, and WANT to face that challenge. You are in the batter’s box, right where you belong”
