Conval Sports Heritage

Conval Sports Heritage In every sport, there's a great story to tell!

When the doors first opened in the fall of 1970 or when a new breed of Cougar athlete puts on a uniform, Conval Sports Heritage celebrates past and present history makers at Conval High School.

We have learned of the passing of Charles “Chick” Hamel, one of the great administrators, teachers, coaches and friends of Antrim and Peterborough high schools, and the early years of Conval High. He was 95.

His obituary can be found here: https://www.concordmonitor.com/2026/06/10/obit-charles-hamel-211573371/

“Mr. Hamel” was loved by many, but perhaps none more than by the Antrim High basketball team, of which he served as coach. In his honor, we reprint an article we ran last January. …

This week in history....“The Sound of Music” was held over by popular demand at Peterborough Movies, buckle ski boots were on sale at Whit’s Ski Tows (now Heritage Apartments on Summer Street) for $40, and three standouts from tiny Antrim High School were making basketball headlines in early January of 1968.

The movie and ski boots may have been keepers, but to this day, fans are wondering what might have been had the Warrior trio of Coach Chick Hamel, Bill Davies and Robin Rockwell (pictured) held together for the annual Monadnock League Christmas Tournament. In the end, only Coach Hamel was standing.

In a shocker in the making, Davies went wild with 24 points in less than two periods of play as Antrim held a stunning 36-31 lead over powerful and unbeaten Merrimack. But with less than a minute in the half, Davies rolled his ankle and didn’t return the rest of the game. Merrimack recovered and won, 76-62. Antrim would go on to lose to Conant in the consolation game, with both Davies and star forward Rockwell (ear infection) not seeing a minute of action.

As the Peterborough Transcript noted, “It’s interesting to conjecture what might have happened if Antrim had been at full strength.”

The Warriors, however, were not done. Completing a solid regular season, and with both boys healthy, Antrim defeated Alton and Epping in the Class S tournament before bowing to eventual champion and unbeaten Hollis in the semi-finals, 61-52. In the process, Davies wowed the Durham crowd by scoring 104 points in three games—breaking the Class S tournament scoring record of 99 points, but scored in four games. Wow!

What a season!… They began the spring having lost eight seniors and a lot of holes to fill. No one expected them to make it to the final four…but they did! This season may be over, but it’s only the beginning. Congrats, Cougars, and see you next spring!

The future looks bright for Conval’s track and field program as 12 members of the South Meadow School teams head to the state middle school meet on Tuesday in Manchester. The girls’ team won the Tri-County League’s Division 3 West championship, held May 30 at Conval and attended by eight schools, while the boys’ team finished second.

At the Division 3 West meet for the winning girls’ team, Inora Rushalko and Greta Bielagus finished first and second in the 100 meter run; Brooklynn Sipe won the 200 meter while Charlotte Broadley finished third; Rushalko also won the 400 meter, with Penny Griffiths finishing third; it was a clean sweep in the 100, won by Brooklyn Sipe, with Bielagus second and Leah Sipe third; the 4x100 meter relay team came in first; Bielagus placed second in the high jump; and Broadley and Griffiths finished first and second in the long jump.

The SMS boys were paced by a first place finish by Davin Ladebauche and third place by Locke Olesky in the 100 meter run; Kingsley Cummings won the 200, with Ladebauche placing third; Olesky won the 400, with Ari Pope finishing third; Rylee Patterson placed third in the 1600 meter event, while the 4x100 relay team finished first and the 4x400 relay team placed second; Weston Moore took first in the 100 meter hurdles; Ryan Yerardi finished third in the high jump; Ladebauche and Colby Jesseaume finished first and second in the long jump; and Olesky was shot put champion.

Congratulations and good luck!

At the NHIAA Meet of Champions held at Oyster River High on Saturday, Conval track and field’s 4x400 relay team finished second in the state to Pinkerton by a fraction of a second, but still recorded a new school record time of 3:21.70 . It was just .52 of a second off the state record set last year by Winnacunnet High of Hampton. The team of (pictured from left) Ross Stephens, Bretton Davies, Walter Stephens and Griffin Schultz now goes on to the New Englands next Saturday.

It was also a fantastic day for Ross Stephens (inset with Schultz), who won the 400 meter event in state record time! Griffin placed fifth in the same event but earned a personal best of under 50 seconds.

“What a day!” said coach Cindy McLaughlin. Couldn’t agree more.👊

What a finish!… Conval ace Sydney Borges struck out the last batter of the game to secure the Cougars’ 5-4 win over Campbell on Saturday in the D2 state quarterfinals, AND picked up her 600th career strikeout!

Key back to back hits by Sydney and catcher Chloe Hamlin broke open a close game. Campbell crawled back in it but the Cougars were aided by strong defense by shortstop Kinley Moore (fifth photo) and second baseman Bryanna Mattson (sixth photo).

Conval now advances to the D2 final four Tuesday at 7 pm at Plymouth State University.
