I had an awesome day of education at Training the Older Adult’s Workshop hosted in Rancho Cordova, CA.

TOA owner and founder presented “Strategies to Longevity.” Strategy #1? Resistance training to prevent sarcopenia and osteopenia.

Other topics included “Preventing Falls,” “Training for Sports” such as golf and pickleball, and strategies for working with clients with Parkinson’s Disease.

Thanks TOA for your passion to train trainers to help older adults live long lives - and equally important - strong lives!

Squats are one of the most important exercises for building strength in our hips and legs. And when we hold weight in the “goblet” position, squats can also be an effective exercise for building core strength. Holding the weight at chest level requires the abdominal and spinal muscles to stay engaged to keep the torso upright. This constant bracing prevents the weight from pulling the body forward, training the deep core stabilizers. Over time, this improves posture, balance, and protection for the spine during daily movements.

One of my favorite functional hinge exercises is a kickstand RDL (Romanian Deadlift). It is a fantastic exercise for older adults because it provides many of the benefits of a single-leg RDL while being more stable and less intimidating. Proper hip hinge training is essential for safe bending, lifting, and daily movements like picking items off the floor. We're also building posterior strength and stabilizing our core which are so important in fall prevention.

Exercise isn’t just about building muscle or burning calories — it’s literally the most powerful tool we have against aging.

Dr. Eric Verdin, CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, says it best:
👉 “Exercise is the best anti-aging intervention we have.”

Here’s why ⬇️
✨ Keeps your heart strong
✨ Protects your brain health
✨ Improves balance & mobility
✨ Boosts energy & mood
✨ Helps you stay independent longer

The fountain of youth? Turns out it’s hidden in your workouts. 💪

Want to get stronger over time? Start with progressive overload.
Just keep adding a little more — weight, reps, time, effort. That’s how progress is made.

Not every set has to be to failure!
Reps in Reserve (RIR) means stopping when you could do 1–2 more reps. You’re still pushing yourself — just in a smarter way.

Did you know strength training can help reduce inflammation?
It’s true — especially when paired with a little cardio. It targets inflammation-causing fat cells and protects your muscle mass, which is critical for staying strong and independent as we age.

Even if inflammation isn’t on your radar, here’s the simple truth:
👉 More movement = better health.
No downside. Just benefits.

Let’s move with purpose. 💪

Most people haven’t heard of it—
but sarcopenia affects 1 in 3 over 65 and half over 80.

It’s age-related muscle loss, and it increases the risk of falls, frailty, and loss of independence.

But there’s good news:
🏋️‍♀️ Lifting weights + eating enough protein can reverse it.

No matter your age, it’s never too late to get stronger.

This was my first time attending IDEA Health and Fitness Association's annual conference. Over 1000 trainers, coaches and health professionals attended the 3-day event in Sacramento. On Saturday, I participated in some excellent workshops on improving balance and agility for older adults, glute-training, and habit stacking.

At the Expo, I also got to connect with my friend and mentor Robert Linkul , owner of Training the Older Adult. Very fun to try out some of the fitness industry's latest technology.

Thanks IDEA Health & Fitness Association for hosting such an awesome event!

Osteoporosis isn’t a guarantee of aging and strength training is one of the best ways to fight it. 💪🦴

When we lift, our muscles pull on our bones creating just the right kind of stress to signal the body to build denser, stronger bones. It’s like sending a message: “Hey body, we need more support here!”

And the bonus? You’re building strength, confidence, and resilience in the process.

It’s never too late to start. Let’s lift for strong bones and a stronger life.
