Diary of an Entrepreneur with Caretaking Responsibilities who Embraces Profit Margins AND Time Freedom Part 3
Frequently, in business coaching, you are asked to dream, to dream about your ideal life.
And you’re about how much you want to work and how much money you want to make.
For this to work you have to get specific.
“I want to make X money per quarter with X% in profit working Y hours per week Z week per year.”
This is not my first rodeo reflecting on these questions. When I was younger and pre-marriage and children, I had a good balance of profit and time it worked pretty well.
After having young children close together and my teenager to guide, I came back to these questions with a markedly different perspective. I needed to spend drastically less time on work and make a LOT MORE money.
I applaud all the people in the world who were able to come to this conclusion without deep caretaker needs whether it’s children, the elderly, or friends who need help.
I see caretaking as a hugely underappreciated and completely monetarily unrewarded part of many people's experiences.
Looking out for others literally makes the world go round and reduces loneliness and nervous system dysregulation.
Since I was doing the lion's share of caretaking in my family I needed my business to be created to not only pay me for my business but also my caretaking needs. Because as we know there is no government support for having a family within the US at least.
So if the government is not going to step up YET, I see the solution as being entrepreneurs with caretaking needs to begin to fill the gap.
Because it's not in my nature to sit back and wait for the solution to come to me. I'm going to try and do something about it.
The idea of entrepreneurs who also have caretaking responsibilities on top of their businesses need to develop profits and time so that we can change the narrative.
No, I can’t work 40 hours a week AND run a business AND support others.
Yes, I can choose to hire our all my domestic work, of which I do some, but even when I do that it’s either me or my husband who has to handle ALL THE THINGS when what you hire out falls through, changes or the needs of the people you are caretaking changes.
At the end of the day, we are the leaders of our home and so when the s**t hits the fan we have to handle it. We can’t farm it out to someone else.
It’s just like running my brick-and-mortar Pilates studio for 20 years. Even though I got to the place of no longer teaching at my studio and had 7 employees with teachers, a marketing content expert, an in-house local marketing expert, AND a studio manager, I was still the leader.
So whether it's your home life or your work life YOU NEED a business that gives you healthy profit margins and time freedom FULL STOP.
As I was asked to reflect anew on my time and financial desires my biggest takeaway is my backsliding with time management.
And the connection between declining profit margins and then working longer hours, thinking that as an entrepreneur if I worked harder or more somehow my profit margins would increase.
That works …. sometimes.
But it doesn’t work if you also have caretaking responsibilities –or just other things you want to do in your life because… those activities suffer when you put more time into work.
If this trifecta of concern:
⏰ time,
💆🏼♀️caretaking or just supporting others
💰 and profit
resonates with you I invite you to DM me and get on my waitlist so that I can support you in changing the world one business at a time.
While you’re reaching out to me in the DMs I invite you to use this formula and share with me your dreams:
“I want to make X money per quarter with X% in profit working Y hours per week Z week per year.”
And extra credit if you all share your caretaking needs and responsibilities with me because these are important and need to be a part of the conversation.
