Sonoma State Equestrian Team

Sonoma State Equestrian Team The SSU Equestrian team competes in Zone 8, Region 1 of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) in both disciplines of English and Western.

The Sonoma State Equestrian Team is an intercollegiate riding team that was established in the Spring of 2008. Our team was founded to help SSU students obtain the ability of having a riding career through college. This group of riders, of all levels and abilities, is here to represent SSU at both a regional and national level through the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). We currently

offer three different disciplines of riding, including: hunt-seat, western, and eventing. Our hunt-seat and western teams both compete through the IHSA, which involves catch-riding to promote an equal "playing field" of all riders while competing. You do not need your own horse in order to be on either of these teams and do not need any riding ability at all. For eventing, you do need your own horse and access to a trainer in order to compete.

Ava DeMartini

โ€œBeing a part of the SSU Equestrian Team since my freshman year has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my college years and I truly wouldnโ€™t change a thing.
Through this team, Iโ€™ve met some of my closest friends and made memories that Iโ€™ll carry with me long after graduation. From early mornings getting coffee before shows, long days spent competing, and late night drives home.
Having the opportunity to serve as Western Team Captain during my senior year was an incredible honor and perfect way to finish my time on the team. I am so grateful to our officer team and every club member for making these past four years so special and for giving me friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you, SSU Equestrian, for an unforgettable four years ๐Ÿ’™โ€

โ€œMy experience on the Sonoma State Equestrian team has been nothing short of transformative.
I have been on the team since my freshman year at Sonoma, and it has been an honor to grow alongside such a strong, talented, and supportive group of people. I have not only developed as a rider, but also as a person. From early morning competitions to late night meetings, I have gained confidence and gotten to connect with a team that shares the same passion for riding as I do.
This team has become one of the most meaningful parts of my college experience, and while I will miss everyone a lot, I am truly grateful for all of you, and everything this team has given me โค๏ธโ€

โ€œI grew up as a horse girl. Whenever a horse was mentioned in class, I was the person everyone turned to look at. However, at age 16, I stopped riding and was gone from the horse world for 8 years!
I was walking the SSU campus when I saw the team tabling. I looked up if you needed a horse to join and when I saw you didnโ€™t, I immediately reached out to sign up.
This team brought me back to my love of horses and completely changed the direction of my life. Once again I am a crazy horse girl and I couldnโ€™t be happier.
Thanks to the team, I was able to ride for a year and a half at a much more affordable price.
I moved to Sonoma without knowing anyone and was at a really low point in my life.
The team gave me everything. It gave me something to look forward to every week, true friendships, and a purpose in my life.
My favorite moments on the team were spending time my wonderful teammates during lessons and shows, and being able to grow as a rider by working with different horses.โ€œ

โ€œThis is a photo of me and Oscar together.
I was on the equestrian team for two semesters.
Itโ€™s been fun riding the horses and helping out with the fundraisers.
Iโ€™m planning on becoming a full time teacher in the future.
I hope to lease my very own horse one of these days.
Itโ€™s been a blast!โ€œ

๐ŸŒŸ SENIOR SPOTLIGHT ๐ŸŒŸ

โ€œI joined the SSU Equestrian Team midway through freshman year thinking it would just be something fun and lowkey to do after competing internationally in equestrian vaulting for 12 years. Turns out it became one of the biggest parts of my college experience. ๐Ÿด

In 3 ยฝ years, I went from barely riding outside of trail rides to competing in IHSA Semi-Finals. In addition I was the sports clubโ€™s Fundraiser Manager, Treasurer, and President during my time.ย

Some of my favorite memories will always be the long road trips with Disney singalongs on the way to horse shows ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿš— and traveling to Illinois for Western Equitation Semi-Finals. Iโ€™m grateful for everything this team taught me! โค๏ธ

After graduation, Iโ€™ll be applying to veterinary school to focus on livestock and equine medicine while working in veterinary sports medicine. ๐Ÿฉบโ€œ
