Richard update!!!

I’m on vacation this week but still met with Richard because we have been having so much forward progress that I didn’t want to slow the roll.

Today had me in near tears! I think we both were so freakin excited that I literally jumped up and down clapping!!

Just a few short weeks ago Richard could not touch his knees to the blocks with the blanket. Today, no blocks, both knees connected and no hands on the chair. Removing the hands was initially terrifying for him. Then he got all the way back up with a good amount of strength and minimal struggle 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻.
We talk every single week about limiting beliefs. And how fear cripples us more than anything. The stories we have created are not necessarily our reality but we live as if they are.

Today Richard stood up from the floor for the first time in 15-20 years he said. When he stood up he said “god damn!” His face was in disbelief and I think we both almost cried.

THIS is what I do here. He did the work. I just guided him and the most important thing I do for anyone is empower them to try new things. I am your biggest cheerleader and I give you a safe space to try. It’s not about coming in and crushing poses. It’s about becoming your highest functioning self.

Richard is 76 and is starting to move better than he has in years with a consistent practice. My heart is so dang full today❤️❤️❤️

GO RICHARD!! I hope he inspires you to start moving your body. It doesn’t just get better, it only keeps declining. So many people say after_____ I will start yoga. When ____ then I will start yoga and I just do not understand that😞 Pushing off potentially living your best life. Get started!!!!

THIS IS MY PHILOSOPHY surrounding yoga. The practice extends beyond the mat.🙏🏻

A good teacher doesn't hand you answers. They help you notice what you already know.

InnerDimensionYoga.com/fbt

There's a version of teaching that positions the teacher as the authority — the one with the answers, the corrections, the final say on what's right. But the more useful role is closer to a mirror: reflecting back what's already true about a student's body, breath, or effort, so they can see it clearly enough to work with it themselves.

A cue like "soften your shoulders" isn't handing someone a rule to follow forever. It's pointing at something they can learn to feel on their own, until eventually they don't need the cue at all. The goal isn't dependence on the instruction — it's building the kind of awareness that makes the instruction unnecessary over time.

This applies outside the studio too. The best mentors, managers, and guides aren't the ones who hand you the answer fastest. They're the ones who ask the question that helps you find it yourself — because that's the version of the answer that actually sticks.

Where in your life are you relying on someone else's authority instead of trusting what you already sense to be true?

If you're ready to build that kind of self-trust in your practice, start your free 10 day trial at InnerDimensionYoga.com/fbt.

Inner Dimension is a monthly subscription platform full of high-quality cinematic yoga and meditation classes led by Travis Eliot and Lauren Eckstrom. Start your 10-day free trial today.

Hello muh lovelies!! My kiddo is coming home 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️❤️ So I will be taking time off while he is home to love him, spend good quality time with him and feed him some delicious food. The studio will sadly be closed Monday August 31- Tuesday September 8. I will reopen Wednesday September 9. If you are on auto pay please shoot me a message so I don’t have to go through every profile to figure out who is so I can adjust your pass date. If you pay in person, you will just add an extra week to your pass! No one loses time on their passes here at The Breathing Room! I will miss sharing space with you next week.

These are some of my 5:30 am yogis! One of them sent a reel doing this pose in a doorway so a few of us did it and shared videos and pics. Then in one of our classes this week we did a scorpion flow and I had to get a pic of one of our male yogis because he locked in this scorpion pose and held it for a good amount of time.

Sometimes we just need a challenge to get us to try something new and to see just what you are capable of. I love their energy and willingness to try things!!

Also one of my newer chair yogis who has been coming for a few months now told me when she first started coming that she would like to tie her own shoes. I didn’t ask questions, then I completely forgot that was a goal of hers. She told my mom yesterday that she was able to tie her own shoes. I messaged her and asked how long it had been and she said 5-6 years!!! So in a few short months of a consistent yoga practice she met that goal🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻. I was so excited for her!!

Then my mom told me yesterday that for the first time since Covid she was able to do a forward fold in her chair👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. She was also able to work outside all day for two days in a row. That’s a big deal because she is on oxygen and needs a lung transplant. She is in a process of losing weight to qualify for that transplant.

So there have been some fun and amazing things shared here in the studio this week and I get to be part of their journeys. I love love love sharing space with muh lovelies❤️❤️❤️

This is Richard Johnson a fairly new yogi. Richard shares a short testimony below. I would like to share how we came to be connected.

A few months ago Richard reached out to me and asked me if I did private classes and I said no that I really don’t have the time for them. I encouraged him to try some classes out. Asked him if he could get on the floor and he said he could so he came to a Sunday mat class with his wife. When he came in he went to the mat next to his wife and I noticed he was standing and not getting on the floor. I made some small talk then when we were about to begin he started to get emotional. I jumped up and immediately started to affirm him and shifted direction. I got out a chair and led the mat class from a chair. He and I did movement from the chair while everyone else did mat. When class was over I encouraged him to attend a chair class instead. I believe maybe that was the first time he realized he could not get up and down from the floor. Maybe he hadn’t tried in a really long time. He came to a chair class and even that was just too much for him. Well that first encounter really tugged on my heart strings so I offered to meet with him privately to get him to a place where he could attend regular chair classes. He has recently had a valve replacement which helps with his endurance. We are working on range of motion, balance and strength. His greatest fear is falling. I am helping him find stability and confidence. We have been working these lunges in our chair class as well. It took some doing but he can now trust himself to rest the knee completely on the block and stand back up again. I am so dang happy with his progress. I kick his butt and he just says more please😂. He is determined to be more functional and he works dang hard at it. I will keep giving you Richard updates because he is an inspiration. We definitely lose what we don’t use and he hasn’t used his body to benefit him in a really long time.

I have been telling my yogis that we are working these lunges and squats because there will come a day where you might just find yourself on the ground and you may not have anyone to help you up or anything around to help assist you back up and you need to be able to do this for yourself. These are the things we work toward here. Becoming our highest functioning self. It’s not about making the poses pretty in class. It’s about how the poses and movement we do help you to live life to the fullest outside of this space. I hope Richard’s testimony encourages you to get moving!!!

My “before” story is like folks who want to be 20 years old again. Sharp mind: questionable body…
My “after” story starts last spring when my cardiologist announced that I needed heart repair and that I should “take it easy.” I had been interested in Tai Chi and Yoga as gentle exercises and called Vickie at The Breathing Room (https://thebreathingroom.offeringtree.com/) to ask if there was space for me in her classes. She said “Yes!” I attended a regular class and realized I needed help for even the easier forms. Vickie suggested we work together to reach minimum ability. Our sessions are structured, intense and successful!

Also, when my yogis say things like “oh god” it just fuels me and makes me chuckle 😈😂
