Week 9: Solid

Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Ephesians 2:20-22

Being an athlete can feel like a roller coaster. Some days you play great, feel confident, and everything seems to click. Other days are filled with mistakes, struggles, and disappointment. If our identity is built on softball, we’ll constantly rise and fall with our performance. But Ephesians 2 reminds us that our lives are built on Jesus, the cornerstone. When He is at the center, we have something steady to stand on no matter what happens on the field. Our identity isn’t earned through wins, stats, or recognition—it’s been given to us by the Creator of the universe. Because of that, we can play with freedom, knowing who we are never changes.

What are some signs that you’re finding your identity in softball instead of in Christ?

If your kid isn’t a superstar at 10 years old, stop acting like their future is over.

Youth sports have turned into a race that nobody can even explain. Parents are losing their minds over rankings, trophies, and who hit puberty first, while completely missing the point.

The goal isn’t to build the best 10-year-old.

The goal is to build an athlete that still loves competing at 18.

Some of the toughest, most successful athletes I’ve ever been around weren’t the studs when they were young. They were the kids getting beat. The kids sitting behind someone better. The kids learning how to fight through failure instead of being protected from it.

You know what’s funny? College coaches don’t give a damn who was dominating 10U.

They care about who can handle pressure. Who can be coached. Who shows up when things get hard. Who keeps getting better when everyone else starts making excuses.

Some of you are so obsessed with your kid being “ahead” that you’re burning them out before they even have a chance to figure out how good they can be.

Not every athlete develops at the same speed. Not every kid grows at the same rate. Not every future college player looks like a future college player at 10 years old.

Quit chasing youth sports status symbols.

Quit comparing your kid to every other kid.

Quit treating every weekend tournament like it’s the damn Olympics.

Let them struggle. Let them fail. Let them learn how to earn it.

Because the athletes who make it aren’t usually the ones who were crowned the best at 10.

They’re the ones who were still standing when everyone else got tired of the grind.
