Often, we learn martial arts only by mimicking the physical movements of our teachers, but zanshin is not something you can copy. Sure, you can mimic the “look” of zanshin you might see from your teacher, but until you experience zanshin, it cannot be realized.
What is it?
Zanshin is a term used in Japanese martial arts that refers to a state of awareness, alertness, and readiness to respond.
The literal translation of "zanshin" is "remaining mind" or "lingering heart." It pertains to maintaining mental awareness and preparedness, even after executing an action or technique.
In practice, it means being constantly vigilant and ready during combat or training sessions and everyday life.
Zanshin is written in Japanese as 残心, where:
残 (zan) means "remain" or "lingering"
心 (shin) means "heart" or "mind"
Zanshin is in the moment, wholly committed to what you’re doing and following through to its end. It’s those moments when your mind is on guard and fully alert to its surroundings.
It’s nothing mystical.
It’s rather ordinary.
