Part 3
WMHS Varsity Volleyball Team Motto
Dig deep. Set goals. Hit the mark!
Varsity Volleyball Team Goals
● Varsity Volleyball has one objective: success. This DOES NOT mean winning at
all costs. It means preparing a group of young ladies to come together for a
common goal and playing better than they ever thought they could. For some
teams this may result in a district or regional championship, or even a place in
the state tournament. Individually, success may mean the joy of self-improvement
and the comradery that comes from team sports. And for a select few, it could
mean the opportunity to continue their volleyball career at the next level. Varsity Tryouts
The following criteria influence decisions regarding selection for the WMHS Varsity
Volleyball Team each year:
● Team Composition – We aim for a roster of 12 to 15 players. At minimum, the
team should include 2 setters, 2 outside hitters, 2 middle hitters, 2 right-side
hitters, 1 defensive specialist and 1 libero. The remaining 2 to 5 spots will be
filled by players in any of these positions as the coaches see fit.
● Future Varsity Needs – While previous varsity selection does not guarantee
future selection, anticipated graduations play a significant role in team selection.
While most players in their first season with the varsity team won’t see significant
playing time, they will gain valuable experience in practice playing at a higher
level that will benefit them greatly in the future.
● Player Characteristics – The attributes described in the Player Characteristics
section above are especially desirable.
● Physical Attributes – While skills are teachable, height is not. Taller players are
particularly advantageous for certain positions, though not all.
● Skills – Selection for the varsity team requires players to have a better than
average understanding of team volleyball concepts as well as a thorough
mastery of the skills required to play their position at a high level. Players’ ability
to take and implement feedback are considered a skill and are taken into
account.

WMHS Junior Varsity Volleyball Team Motto
Play Hard! Have Fun! Make Mistakes!
WMHS Junior Varsity Volleyball Team Goals
● Junior Varsity Volleyball, like other JV sports, has two primary objectives:
preparing student-athletes for Varsity competition and striving to win. Though
these goals may seem at odds, they are actually interdependent. Neglecting one
for the sake of the other leads to failure.
● Preparation for Varsity sports – Regardless of grade level (8th, 9th, or 10th),
every student-athlete who makes the JV team demonstrates potential for Varsity.
Through structured and regimented practice, we refine existing volleyball skills, introduce advanced concepts, and provide every player the opportunity to
showcase their growth as both teammates and individuals.
● Winning – Echoing the words of New York Jets NFL coach Herman Edwards:
“You Play to Win the Game.” Success requires not just skill, but the determination
to perform under pressure. By gradually exposing players to challenging
situations, they learn to push beyond their limits and compete at their best.
Junior Varsity Tryouts
The following criteria influence decisions regarding selection for the WMHS JV
Volleyball Team each year:
● Team Composition – We aim for a roster of 12 to 15 players. At minimum, the
team should include 2 setters, 2 outside hitters, 2 middle hitters, 1 right-side
hitter, and 1 defensive specialist. The remaining 4 to 7 spots will be filled by
players in any of these positions.
● Future Varsity Needs – Varsity needs play a significant role in JV team selection.
For example, if all of the Varsity outside hitters are due to graduate next year, the
JV roster may focus on developing more outside hitters to ensure continuity of
program excellence.
● Player Characteristics – The attributes described in the Player Characteristics
section above are especially desirable.
● Physical Attributes – Athleticism is improveable, but height is out of our control.
Focus on improving on what you can control.
● Skills – This criterion is flexible. Players with potential, the right characteristics,
and who meet both JV and future Varsity needs are likely to catch coaches’ attention.

Part 2
Player Characteristics
● Coachability – Players should embrace guidance and corrections with
enthusiasm, make the recommended adjustments, and apply those
improvements to future play.
● Self-Motivated – The ideal player is the first to arrive at practice and the last to
leave, energetic and ready to work. They seek opportunities to improve outside of practice and the season, maintain healthy habits and physical fitness, fulfill all
student requirements, and represent WMHS with pride.
● Team Player – Players must respond constructively to coaches’ decisions, even
when they conflict with personal desires. Willingness to do whatever is needed
for team goals, as well as supporting teammates both on and off the court, are
essential qualities.
Coaches Characteristics
● Transparency – Coaches must share information. Players that understand the
“why” of drills, line-ups, team composition, etc tend to “buy in” and perform better.
● Consistency – Barring unforeseen circumstances; changes in philosophy,
offensive and defensive systems, and to a lesser degree line-ups and rotations
should be kept to a minimum. This does not mean that playing time is
guaranteed or that players that improve cannot earn more playing time.
● Humility – Coaches will admit their mistakes and grow from them, modeling this
to the team.
● Approachability – Coaches will be available to discuss things with their players,
at appropriate times and in appropriate settings.

The Simplicity and Structure of
WMHS Volleyball Part 1
At its core, volleyball is a game defined by probability: the objective is to maximize your
team's chances of success while minimizing those of your opponent. Achieving this
balance relies on a group of talented individuals working together as a cohesive unit
toward a shared goal. The role of the coaches is to assemble a team of players whose
abilities and collaboration will increase the likelihood of victory.
Vision
● We aim to foster an environment and culture where young women can learn
volleyball at the highest possible level and strive for excellence while also
cultivating essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, followership,
commitment, selflessness, sacrifice, sportsmanship, and effective time
management.
Mission
● Our mission is to develop skilled athletes of character and to ignite a passion for
the game in a positive, supportive environment.
Values
● Integrity – Own your mistakes and learn from them, rather than hiding.
● Selflessness – Put the team before yourself.
● Unity – Recognize that every individual has value and deserves the support of
others.
