In 2008, just before Josh Vande Krol, Chris Dunlop, and Sean Calvert embarked on their second STP (Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic) adventure, Josh suggested that they all get different cereal jerseys for the second day of the ride. So, outfitted in Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, and Apple Jacks, the three completed the two day journey to Portland. In 2009, Josh joined Sean in Pendleton, Oregon
for the CROC (Century Ride of the Centuries www.cyclependleton.com). As the two tore through Pendleton in their two-man paceline, Josh's banged up knee and Sean's head cold began to leech the joy out of the ride. Finally just atop a hill outside of town, a flat tire ushered in a new biking experience. They realized that this would be their one weekend to hang out that year so they'd better make the most of it. The rest of the ride was spent shooting pictures and chatting with each other and other cyclists. By the end of the first 100 miles of the ride, they had spent about 3 1/2 hours off their bikes and had taken about 100 pictures. The only other person on the course at the end was the driver of the sag wagon. The next two days were filled with the same experiences...biking between photo opportunities such as a series of spandex-clad cereal cyclists leaping through a field of flowers and a nicely staged bike wreck over a down tree. Other cyclists pointed and commented as they passed. The CROC has been the ride of choice since 2009 and each year new Cereal cyclists have joined the movement. Tod Surdam and Jason Cuthbert poured themselves into the ride in 2010. Mike Chapman got out of his box in 2011, and the most recent flake to jump into the bowl is Josh's dad, Don Vande Krol. We'll be posting pictures of our rides and will keep folks posted of our adventures. Please grab your bikes and come out to join us for a ride. Oh, and bring some milk...these flakes can get pretty dry.
