Building safer, more confident swimmers in our community!

We were grateful to celebrate the support of the Shelby County Legislative Delegation for our Safety Around Water program in partnership with Pelham City Schools!

A special thank you to Representatives Kenneth Paschal Kenneth Paschal and Arnold Mooney Arnold Mooney for joining us and supporting this important initiative. Their investment is helping provide Pelham City Schools second-grade students with the opportunity to learn essential water safety skills. 🏊‍♀️💙

Safety Around Water (SAW) is the YMCA’s water safety program designed to help children become more comfortable and confident in and around the water. Through classroom education and time in the pool, students learn important skills such as how to safely enter and exit the water, what to do if they unexpectedly find themselves in the water, and basic swimming and water safety techniques.

We’re proud to work alongside Pelham City Schools and our community partners to give local students access to skills that can help keep them safer for a lifetime.

🏊 From Camper to Lifeguard: Dakhati’s Y Journey Comes Full Circle 💙

Some staff stories start with a job application. Dakhati’s started as a camper.

He still remembers his first summer at Pelham YMCA Camp — new faces, a counselor who left a lasting impression, and learning to swim for the very first time.

As he got older, he wasn’t ready to leave camp behind. He started volunteering with the Summer Lunch program alongside our Hoover branch. “It was interesting being on the other side — giving instead of receiving. In a good way.”

Today, Dakhati is a certified lifeguard at the Pelham YMCA. 🛟

💬 “Knowing my brother couldn’t swim, I thought it would be nice to have someone around to save him in case something happens.”

His message for kids walking the same path he once did?
“Trust your gut. It’ll always end up great. Your next impact is waiting.”

Dakhati’s story is a reminder that there’s no single path at the Y — just a lot of ways to stay connected. Whether it’s a job or a volunteer opportunity, there’s a place for you to grow right alongside your community. 💙
