I spent last Wednesday with Naomi and Anthony. Naomi hiked solo from the Santa Fe Ski Basin over to Cowles on the Winsor and Skyline trails. Tuesday was a rain day for most of us and Naomi's hike was a bit soggy.
Our lesson day was a perfect New Mexico fall day, cool weather and fall colors in full swing.
Naomi and Anthony were great students, mastering knots and rigging, casting and a little bit of fishing. The drought has been very hard on our fish population, so chubs were the catch of the day.

It's been a while since I've posted a NM stocking report. Lot's of fish are going into the rivers these days. Game and Fish must be getting ready for the Labor Day holiday. Over 3,000 in the Pecos above the village last week. Over 32,000 in the San Juan Quality water, albeit small. Nearly 3,000 in the Cimmaron from the Gravel pits up to Tolby Creek.

The finished donation box. Over 150 flies that are the flies that I use to fish on the Pecos River. Emergers are well represented this year. I got a little carried away with the nymph side of the box.

Another fly for my donation fly box for the Upper Pecos Watershed Association fundraiser. It's a yellow sally nymph that borrowed, then modified last year to match our Pecos yellow sallies. Can be very effective.

Spent Tuesday with Mackenzie, Brian and CK. We had a great day learning about trout fishing techniques. Can’t wait until we can get together again when we have more water in the river.

Last Sunday, Nathan and Simone drove up from Albuquerque to take half day trout fishing lesson. We got in all of the essentials, including knot tying and rigging a dry dropper fly combination, got some casting in, and spent some time on the water learning line management techniques. A few flies got caught in the trees.
I'm looking forward to our next lesson which will focus on bug identification, fly selection and a lot of time on the water working on technique.

Wildfire season is upon us in the desert southwest. This winter has been extraordinarily dry, with very little snow pack. The Forest Guild has written an excellent paper titled "Increasing Wildfire Awareness and Reducing Human-Caused Ignitions in Northern New Mexico.
