Today is the 120th anniversary of the first (all-Black) athletic conference established by African Americans/Blacks for Black institutions to participate in athletic contests.

The Inter-Scholastic Athletic Association of Middle Atlantic States (I.S.A.A.) held its first event, a track meet, at Howard University on May 30, 1906.

Edwin B. Henderson was the architect of the conference and its athletic events along with Garnet C. Wilkinson.

Henderson ultimately organized a basketball team for the local Twelfth Street Colored Y.M.C.A. and later led them to an undefeated season and the 1909-10 Black national title.

As he continued to grow fan support, Henderson successfully advanced collegiate sports program as garnered administrative support for Howard University to endorse his 12th Streeter squad as its own and first varsity basketball team.

In 1910-11, he coached that team to another undefeated season and the Colored Basketball World’s Championship title.
