In early May, my friend and client Leon Abreu suffered a brain aneurysm at the age of 22 years old. A new client came to me the other day. "You know Richie, I like my wine, I like my pasta and I'm not particularly thrilled about exercise and cardio. But I have to do something because I feel pretty crappy."

I'll call this new client Fred. I can sympathize with Fred. Although I don't like wine, I sure do like pasta and even as a professional trainer, I even get a little tired thinking about training. But I know if I don't do my daily routine, I won't feel too good and I sure won't look the part.

I've met hundreds of Fred's over my 30+ years as a trainer. From experience, I have to guide him into the lake gradually and get him accustomed to the water. Most of the time, shoving him face first into it just won't stick.

Listen, a healthier life including cleaner nutrition and more activity is just a routine that you develop. Is it easy? NO! It is simple? YES.

I've got a 5 Phase Method I've used to get clients like Fred to gradually change their routines and therefore their lifestyles. Maybe it will help you to do the same.

What are you goals? I make sure all of my clients define their goals. Otherwise, I won't know the roadmap to use to get you there. Practice creating and achieving goals. With practice, you get better and achieve more and more, physically and mentally.

Putting your hand through a piece of cement takes practice. Thank you Shihan for teaching me martial arts in every aspect. Breaking this was all mental, clearing the mind... so you don't break your hand. I have had many martial art instructors through multiple disciplines. He is by far the best. End of story.
