Thank you for your interest in the Pearisburg Parks and Recreation Revitalization Project. I am writing this letter to provide you with updated information regarding the status of the project. After working with the conceptual plans provided to the Town by the Virginia Tech Community Design Assistance Center (CDAC), we have concluded that it is not feasible to retrofit another baseball field into the existing field located adjacent to the Community Center due to potential conflicts with the walking trail, sewer line, and other Town assets in the area. These conflicts have raised additional concerns regarding potential engineering, design, and construction costs associated with adding another baseball field into the green space on the site. We also want to make improvements to the Town’s outdoor recreational facilities that ensure our ability to serve all stakeholders groups.
At the regular meeting of Council on February 12, 2019, staff recommended that the Town move forward with a feasibility study to redesign the current large field adjacent the Community Center and to increase its size to 300 ft. We are also exploring the possibility of adding a Tee-ball field into the space adjacent to the existing field. We believe that this plan better positions the Town to complete the project within a reasonable cost, will better serve children of all sports interests, and preserve assets that serve residents of all ages. The scope of this feasibility study is to survey the area adjacent to the Community Center to determine if and how the 300 ft. baseball field and tee-ball field will fit into the space and to generate a cost estimate for completing the work. The feasibility study will not require any funds to be expended from the donations made to the project. Once completed, the Town Council will review the study for its fiscal and operation suitability.
Best Regards,
Todd Meredith
