Payson took two very young teams to the Camp Verde tournament yesterday. With only two seniors, the Payson A team still was able to take third. In fact, they beat every team in the tournament except Fountain Hills. They even defeated the eventual tournament champion, Camp Verde.

The Payson B team enjoyed a successful tournament as well, in spite of the team being composed of strictly freshmen. They defeated Camp Verde B, barely lost to Chino Valley 21-22, and even gave Payson A a solid, close match.

With tryouts next week, we are excited about dividing into permanent teams and diving into our season. We have a great group of motivated, talented players who are wonderful young ladies! Unfortunately, we still don't have a JV coach. The position is normally a 5-month position. However, with the summer season over, the position will be less of a time commitment, at 2 1/2 months. The stipend is $2000, which will make the position more value per hour!

Recent camp at NAU!

Update on volleyball tournaments:

A couple weeks ago we took two teams to the 15-team Show Low tournament. The A team worked hard to earn a third place finish. Blue Ridge took first, and Show Low took second.

Saturday we hosted our own 20-team Payson tournament. We had just enough players to field three teams. Our A and C teams had only 7 players, while our B team had 8 players.

The A team went 5-2 in regular pool play and cross pool play. It earned us the #5 seed in the championship bracket.

We lost our first match in bracket play to Basis Flagstaff, but then defeated Rio Rico A, and then Desert Sunrise A, a couple of formidable 4A schools, to make the final four. We then played Monument Valley, who was ranked #5 last year in 3A. We were thisclose to making the final three, as we held a two-point lead with 15 seconds left. But two quick Mustang points tied it up at the buzzer, and they won the overtime point as well to end our day, 22-23.

On the plus side, the girls rose to the occasion and were able to have a high finish of fourth place in spite of having a small team missing a few varsity players. They played with a lot of resolve and spirit.

Snowflake won the tournament, defeating Chandler Prep in the championship We had a Payson alumni team there, and they won the consolation championship over Vista Grande.

Our B team beat Camp Verde A and B in consolation bracket play, and finished tied for 5th in consolation. Our C team never won, but they had a few matches that were really close. They were the only C team there.

10 Payson girls will head to NAU tomorrow for a three-day camp and tournament there. The following week will wrap up our summer, as we head to the two-day Camp Verde tournament.

Just finished up the NAU camp yesterday! Top-notch instruction from head coach Ken Murphy, assisted by two of his players, outside hitter Hanah Stoddard and setter Taryn Davis. Coach Murphy commented several times how impressed he was with players, and the group as a whole. Was awesome for the Longhorn players to be taught by a DI coach!
