Today, I found myself reflecting on the poolside, thinking about a topic that’s been weighing on my mind lately—the irresponsible interchange of "Resistance Training" and "Strength Training" in the fitness industry.
It's something that seems small but has led to a lot of misconceptions, especially when it comes to weight loss and general fitness.
I have to admit, I was once part of the problem. I used these terms interchangeably without fully understanding or conveying the differences. It’s led to a lot of confusion and false beliefs, and that’s on us as fitness professionals.
This brings me to a memory that’s still vivid in my mind—the one time a family member,, with courage and trust, asked me to show her how to work out. That was the last time.
If I knew then what I know now, maybe she would have found an exercise activity that she enjoyed, that was gentle on her joints, and that gave her a sense of community.
Today, she struggles with simple tasks, like reaching for spices in the cupboard or plating food for the family. And that breaks my heart. No, it’s not entirely my fault. But as professionals, we are responsible for what we know and learn. And I refuse to make the same mistakes twice.
This reflection is more than just about correcting terminology. It's about acknowledging our growth, learning from past experiences, and committing to doing better—for ourselves and those we guide.
My responsibility is to help others find what truly works for them, not just what’s popular or trendy. And I’m determined to keep learning, growing, and applying that knowledge responsibly.
