So our last post caused us to uncover a mystery we have on our hands:
When exactly did The Birdman Koko B Ware win the IWCCW title?
It's commonly reported on many websites that he won it on 6/2/95 in Chattanooga, TN when Greg Valentine (then IWCCW champion) failed to show. This has to be incorrect, as Koko was working an IWCCW event on 6/2 in Schuylkill Haven, PA, where he was already IWCCW champion, and defending against Bob Orton Jr.
Things we know:
-Koko worked an IWCCW event on 3/2 where he wasn't champion.
-During the IWCCW tour of Venezuela during the last week of June '95, Koko is the champion.
-Mario recalls a time he booked Koko through the WWF (not uncommon at the time) only to find he had been double-booked on an event in TN, and Mario gave up his date under the condition Koko was billed as IWCCW champ, which is likely the origin of the erroneous Chattanooga win.
We also have this curious photo of Koko with the IWCCW title. But he also has the USWA Unified title, as well as Jimmy Deo's IWA title.
Koko held the USWA title in late 92, which is around the same title IWCCW and IWA were co-promoting events in Hamburg, PA, so it's possible a photographer for an Apter mag just had Koko pose with a bunch of belts, as there's no question that Koko didn't hold the IWCCW and USWA titles at the same time.
So, when and where did Koko win the IWCCW title? Was it a phantom change in Rio de Janeiro? It's a mystery at the moment. Do you know?
