She was born from a mother bred to fight grizzly bears. She guards 100 sheep alone at night at -20°F. She has never been trained a single command. Meet the dog that.....makes Truly Ewe possible.
Her name is Spot. She's a Turkish Boz, a breed shaped over thousands of years in the Anatolian highlands to do exactly one thing: stay with the flock and kill what comes for it.
Her mother Hazel came from Blackleaf Guardians in northern Montana, where the dogs have to fight grizzlies to do their job. Hazel was the first Boz we ever owned. Within a season we knew we wanted more like her. So we bred her, and Spot was one of the results.
We didn't teach Spot to guard. Hazel did. And the shepherds of Anatolia did, generations back, in a language none of us speak.
At the foot of the Wolf Mountains in Lodge Grass, Montana, Spot and her partner Benny the Jet (a Spanish Mastiff, also no training required) patrol 75 to 100 head of grass-finished hair sheep. Coyotes know better. So do the lions. Now Spot is a mother herself, raising the next generation of guardians right here on the ranch.
We sleep at night because she doesn't.
This is what it takes to raise lamb the way we do it. No feedlot. No barn. Just grass, sky, and a dog with grizzly blood in her line.

We had a heifer in need of help last night and no wonder! This monster was inside her. This morning while doing checks we decided to try and get a weight on him. What do you think!?!

It's that time of year folks. Sometimes we just need a little help up

Winter’s on its way out… or at least it was trying to be. We had a pretty open, forgiving season, but right before spring could settle in, winter decided to remind us who’s boss with one last good, wet storm rolling through.

Now we turn the page to the best time of year, calving season. Early mornings, new life on the ground, and that feeling that everything’s starting fresh again.

And not far behind, everyone’s other favorite, cattle drive season. Time to saddle up and move the herd across the open range in the Bighorn National Forest, just like it’s been done since 1887. No shortcuts, no modern spin, just horses, cattle, and a whole lot of country.

Spring’s knocking, and we’re ready. 🌱🐂

We brought his male puppy in the house because he was getting a little too feral and standoffish out with his other siblings and the sheep. Apparently he just needed a 3 year old to bring him out of his shell.
