The Parkersburg News and Sentinel Half Marathon Visit newsandsentinelhalfmarathon.com to register The half marathon race begins in downtown Parkersburg at 8 a.m. and the two-mile will immediately follow.

The half marathon course will take you out of the city and into the scenic surroundings of W.Va. before looping back into the commercial area. You will finish the race to the cheers of thousands of spectators lined up on Market Street prior to the Parkersburg Homecoming Festival Parade. The minimum age to participate is 15. The most popular crosswalk in Parkersburg on Aug. 15 will be the finish line at Sixth and Market Street.

Along the race course: Finish Line - Mile 13.1

Mile marker 13 is at the Parkersburg Art Center. Just after runners and walkers make the turn off of Eighth Street, participants should be able to hear those in front of them being announced as they cross the finish line. Beginning a descent, runners and walkers will get to enjoy a nice final segment of the Parkersburg News and Sentinel Half Marathon. When you cross the red finish line, with people congratulating you, grab a refreshing drink and a snack as you cheer on others finishing the race.

Once you make the left turn onto Market Street you will be just two blocks from the finish line. Kick in your reserve and power through the final .1 miles to the finish line as you speed down the final downhill of the race.

Along the race course: Old Carnegie Library – Mile 12.9

Once on Green Street, racers will pass the old Carnegie Library. Built in 1905 with funds provided by Andrew Carnegie, it served as the Public Library for Parkersburg until it moved to its current location in 1975. A used bookstore operated at the location until 2010.

Along the race course: East Street Bridge – Mile 11.9

The East Street Bridge will carry racers across the Little Kanawha River for the second time. The 400-foot polygonal Warren truss span is one of four Parkersburg Bridges that carry traffic across the waterway. The bridge was constructed in 1996.

Along the race course: Old Man River – Mile 11.4

Founded in 1988, the mission at 703 Pike St. in Parkersburg serves residents’ food needs with three primary programs. A backpack program provides 400 school students with a Friday package of food that they can take home with snacks for the weekend. Each week trucks are loaded up with 1,160 hot meals to be distributed to seniors and disabled people throughout Wood County. Boxes of food are also distributed directly to 1,500 households that need them. Food left over from the races will be donated to the group following the event.

Along the race course: Bickel Mansion – Mile 8.6

Mile 9 takes a left turn from Marrtown Road to Dupont Road, and on the left is a 7-Eleven, but to the right is the old Bickel Mansion, now a law office. At one time, the Bickel Estate was home to 400 acres that contained a large zoo and a horse racetrack with grandstands. During Christmas time, the estate would have been decorated with all kinds of Christmas lights, as Mr. Bickel was an entertainer. The property also contains a carriage house and a fountain. The stone house can be viewed from both Marrtown Road and West Virginia 95.

Along the race course: Top of the hill – Mile 7

When you get to the top of the hill, you will run around the historic Long Tom cannon. The giant refurbished Civil War-era siege cannon. The restored giant was placed in the park in 2021 and points towards the Ohio River. The gun is near an overlook where racers can get a view of the first six miles of the race if they want to take a quick break before heading back down the hill.

Along the race course: Fort Boreman Park – Miles 6-8

Veteran racers are used to running around a cone and getting a high-five from volunteer Kevin Barr. Kevin is still at the turn around point, but he is now at the top of the hill. The entire park is closed to traffic for the race that will use the left lanes both up and down the hill. The gentle incline will take you through a beautiful and wild area where you are likely to see wildlife wondering what all the noise is about. A water stop mid-way will help you both going up, and down the hill.

Along the race course: Heading south - Mile 5.1

When you exit Point Park you will first pass a water stop before turning left and running up Ann Street the wrong way to get onto bridge that will take you across the Little Kanawha River. The ramps leading up to the bridge are under reconstruction. This year both directions will use the northern most ramp, next year they will move onto reconstructed southern ramp. Up to this point, the course has been fairly flat. You will now be entering a long incline that will take you to Point Park. As you begin your journey up the ramp, look up the flag on the hill to your left. Depending on how fast you are, you will be there shortly. For the next mile or so, you are running on the same route as the old course.
