OCTOBER IS ABOUT AWARENESS, ACCESS & ACTION

This October, The Amputee Center is celebrating disability awareness by shining a light on what is possible when people have access to the right support, resources, movement, and community.

Our work began with a strong focus on supporting the amputee community, and we continue to grow alongside the people we serve.

Today, The Amputee Center offers much more than a place to connect.

We provide:
• Support and resources for amputees and their families
• Physical therapy opportunities with trained professionals
• Adaptive yoga and movement
• Community outings and social events
• Education and disability awareness
• And now, weekly Adaptive Fitness, creating even more opportunities for people with disabilities to build strength, confidence, mobility, and independence.

Our highly trained staff and community partners understand that fitness and wellness should not be limited by disability. Programs can be modified. Equipment can be adapted. Spaces can become accessible. And people deserve the opportunity to discover what their bodies CAN do.

The Amputee Center is becoming a resource not only for amputees, but for individuals throughout our region looking for adaptive movement, wellness, connection, and a community that believes inclusion should be part of everyday life.

Throughout October, we’ll be sharing facts, stories, programs, community voices, and ways YOU can help us spread disability awareness.

When a father leaves, the mother becomes a “single mother.”

She gets a new label. He remains a “father.” Not absent father, just father.

Language reveals where we place responsibility. Women are so often defined by the absence of men, while men can be absent without their identity as fathers being questioned at all.

In He Said, She Said, I write about the gendered double standards that follow women through motherhood, separation and the family justice system and how ideas about what makes a “good mother” can become another way of judging and controlling women.

It is also why I founded Proudmans, a specialist trauma-informed family law firm. We represent women and children navigating separation, domestic abuse, coercive control and complex children proceedings while working to challenge the assumptions that continue to shape family law.

A woman raising her children is not the story of a man who left.

It is the story of the woman who stayed.
