I can’t remember whether I heard this or read this, but it has to do with a big difference between having a good seat and having good hands.

The idea that having a good seat is more of a physical process and development, as the rider learns how the moving body of the human meshes with and is absorbed by the moving body of the horse.

Whereas having good hands is more of an emotional process, as the human learns how to let go of the need to dominate the neck and head of the horse, and learns to communicate instead of to control.

Very interesting, I think, to break it down this way. Now, of course, the big challenge is to actually DO it!

The Difference Between Quiet and Dead

Many riders spend years trying to create a quiet horse.
But quiet isn't always good.

Sometimes quiet means relaxed.
Sometimes quiet means attentive.
And sometimes quiet means the horse has simply stopped participating.

A horse can carry his head low. Move slowly. Stay between the aids.
And still be completely disconnected.

The horse isn't resisting.
He's just no longer contributing to the conversation.

A connected horse feels alive.
There is energy waiting underneath you.
The ears flick.
The back swings.
The horse feels ready to answer a question before you've fully asked it.

The goal isn't silence.
The goal is willingness.

I don't want a horse that has learned to stop talking.
I want a horse that wants to keep having the conversation.

Because partnership isn't measured by how little the horse does.
It's measured by how much he chooses to offer.
