While it may appear similar to the original Dark Sleeper, this new Sleeper Gill is a bit different than its older brother. As of now, the bait is only offered in one size (measuring 3.2” and 3/4 oz), it features a significantly larger tail for harder thumping action, a hollow pocket below the hook for increased hookup ratio, and an adapted dorsal fin weedguard for reduced hang ups.⁣

This new soft plastic lure seems really well made, but perhaps more one-dimensional than the Dark Sleeper. With its taller profile and bigger tail, I see it more as a swimbait than a jig. It also retails for $9.99, which is relatively steep for what it is. ⁣

🔥 SUCH A GOOD SWIMBAIT! 🔥⁣

THIS IS WHY I PREFER 3 HOOK JERKBAITS!⁣
⁣
Don’t get me wrong, I still have and use plenty of smaller 2 hook jerkbaits when the situation calls for it. But most of the time, I opt for a jerkbait with 3 hooks so I have the best chance to hook up with nippers and swipers and then increase the odds of another hook grabbing them during the fight (like happened here).⁣
⁣
While fishing the Rip Stop 12 (the larger, 3 hook model), I had this little guy go for the head of the bait. He was barely hooked in the mouth, but the middle hook ended up getting him on the chin, which helped me land the fish. Many people associate smaller jerkbaits with smaller fish, but the little ones will eat big baits too. Bass can be ambitious!⁣

RIP IT AND STOP IT!⁣

Do you use this jerkbait? It’s the Rip Stop 12 in the Silver color pattern, with the middle treble hook swapped out for a Bladed Hybrid Treble.⁣
⁣
I love this bait because it runs shallow and can be worked so many different ways. Like a traditional jerkbait on a jerk jerk pause retrieve, straight swim, or you can pull it and stop it. The flat sides make the bait roll and flash more than others, and its hard plastic tail stops the lure in place whenever paused. The bladed treble just gives a little added flash and appearance of another baitfish, which never hurts.⁣

The Rip Stop is definitely a must-have for all bass fishermen, but especially all you bank beaters like me!⁣

Pictured here is the BAMF Shad (purple shad color) rigged on a 5/0 Swim Blade hook. This soft plastic swimbait is 5.25” long, has a very natural design, and a deep belly slot for rigging weedless on keel-weighted swimbait hooks like this one or an Owner Beast.⁣

CHUNKY FALL BASS!⁣

The wind was blowing like crazy here in CO last week, which made fishing really tough. But I did manage to catch a couple bass, including this nice 3 pounder on the Oyster colored KVD 2.5 Wakebait.⁣
⁣

DO YOU THROW WAKEBAITS?⁣

Pictured here is the KVD 2.5 Wake (Oyster color), a one-knocker style wakebait in a crankbait body. This lure measures 2.5 inches long and weighs 1/2 oz, not too big and not too small. You’d be surprised at how large of a wake this little guy produces and how loud its rattle chamber is too.⁣
⁣
I’ve swapped the stock hooks out for a size 2 red KVD triple grip (short shank EWG) in front and a size 4 .usa feather treble (round bend) on back.⁣
⁣
I’ve been using this bait pretty regularly over the past 2 seasons and have really come to love it. In low light conditions, I find that a slow and methodical retrieve tends to work best and in daylight or windy conditions a fast retrieve is better.⁣
⁣
For having already caught 15-20 fish, the paint on this specific bait is holding up surprisingly well.⁣

🎣 MATCH THE HATCH!⁣ 🎣

Here I have the .fishing Arashi Swimmer (7” and 2.25 oz multi-jointed swimbait) in the Green Gill color sitting above a live yellow perch I had just caught.⁣

It’s too bad I couldn’t get the smallmouth to munch on the swimbait this day, but I have a hunch it will come into play sometime in the future. What do you think?⁣

PANFISHING WITH MAXSCENT!⁣
⁣
Multiple times this year while bass fishing, I’ve stumbled into perch, crappie, bluegill, sunfish, and even trout. When the bass aren’t biting, I’ll trim some of my Maxscent baits down (the Hitworm and D-Worm) and use a drop shot to catch the panfish.⁣
⁣
On a windy day recently when the bass wouldn’t cooperate, I felt some smaller fish nipping at my 5.5” D-Worm. I trimmed it down to about 2 inches and threaded it on a drop shot hook. And within just a couple casts, I started catching perch after perch and turned lemons into lemonade!⁣

Do you ever use bits of Maxscent baits to target smaller fish? If not, I highly recommend you give it a try.⁣

SKINNY AND PACKED FULL OF ACTION…AND SCENT!⁣

The Maxscent D-Worm is a 5.5” shakey style worm that I’ve started using recently and one I really like. It has a very skinny body with a slight taper, and this color called Bold Bluegill may be my favorite.⁣
⁣
As you can see, this day I opted for a light texas rig instead of a shakey head presentation since I was fishing through heavier grass much of the time. I was using a pegged 3/16 oz tungsten bullet weight and a 2/0 Grip-Pin EWG hook to prevent this rather soft bait from slipping down the hook.⁣

What are your thoughts on this worm? THROW OR NO???⁣
