Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism - Hillsdale Wildlife Area Public Hunting, Fishing, and Trapping Area Habitat types include a mix of cropland, woodland, and warm and cool season grasses.

Common woodland species include, oak, sycamore, cottonwood, walnut, hackberry, ash, elm, hickory and eastern red cedar. Plum, sumac, and dogwood are common shrubs. During construction of Hillsdale Reservoir more than 70 percent of the standing timber was left within the reservoir basin to provide fish habitat. Walleye, catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill are abundant. Approximately 4,5

00 acres of water and 51 miles of shoreline are open to fishing. Roughly 7,000 acres are open to hunting at Hillsdale within the Wildlife area and State Park. Common wildlife includes: whitetail deer, bobwhite quail, squirrel, rabbit, beaver, muskrat, and a variety of waterfowl. Birdwatchers that venture to Hillsdale will see Bald Eagles, shorebirds, finches, warblers, sparrows, and hawks. One hundred acres of shallow water habitat for shorebirds and waterfowl is provided by man made wetlands in the Big Bull, Little Bull and Wade Branch drainages of the reservoir.

Although the sunflower plot in the designated 'Youth-Mentor/Novice' Area was not as productive as hoped and may not provide a great dove hunt, please check out this year's wheat fields. Our tenant was unable to harvest any of his 120 acres of wheat. It has all been mowed and 45 acres was burned (We hope to continue burning the other wheat fields over the next few weeks as the weather allows). There is A LOT of seed on the ground!

2016 DOVE FIELD LOCATIONS

Approximately 50 acres of sunflowers, 5 acres brown top millet, and 122 acres of wheat should provide good hunting opportunities. The sunflower and millet fields adjacent to Big Bull Marsh are within the Youth-Mentor/Novice hunting area and are subject to those regulations. Please remember all dove fields are non-toxic shot only and all hunters must check-in with iSportsman. See link below

We are collecting some excellent harvest data through iSportsman. Thank you all for your help.

Deer Hunters - if you have time to stop by the Hillsdale State Park office with your harvested deer I would really like to get some information on ages of deer harvested. Please bring in the head with lower jaw. Please call ahead (913-783-4507).

Thank you to all those who took the plunge and starting using iSportsman! Participation during dove season was nearly 75%. Heavy May and June rains severely stunted sunflower fields at Rutlader Wildlife Area. Sunflowers likely will not produce seed for the 2015 dove season.
