LAST TRAIN OUT

The old ghosts found their voice through the referees whistle.

Jagiellonia didn't need much. Two free kicks within the first 21 minutes of the match. Two goals.

And suddenly 107 years of ghosts felt very real.

For a club chasing its first Illinois State Cup Quarterfinal, and a city chasing its first State Cup champion in 107 years, it felt like the old story all over again.

Not on this night.

🚂 Christian "J-TRAIN" Baumgartner took over.

The Ohio State-Buckeye delivered a hat trick, turning another haunting into a celebration as Steel City stormed past Jagiellonia 4-2 and into the Illinois State Cup Quarterfinals for the first time in club history.

Joliet remains Baumgartner's stage.
His hat trick was his fourth on Joliet soil. He now owns an astonishing 15 goals in just seven all-time matches played in the city. He also surpassed Jake Lysik as the club’s all-time leading scorer with 17 goals.

The ghosts have denied every Joliet-based club for 107 years.

Now Steel City stands three wins away.

Next comes the biggest challenge yet.

Steel City stands one win away from its first-ever trip to the Illinois State Cup quarterfinals.

The red-n-black have hit a purple patch. Monday’s narrow 1-0 defeat at Jaslo was the first time Steel City has been held scoreless in 15 matches.

This Round of 16 match was originally scheduled for last Thursday, but was postponed due to weather.

Waiting in the quarterfinals is 15-time Illinois State Cup champions RWB Adria — the most decorated club in tournament history.

The last Joliet-based team to lift the Illinois State Cup did so in 1909. Steel City is determined to end the drought.

🏴‍☠️LATE BLOW

Death. Taxes. And Steel City finding no joy against Czarni Jaslo.

For now, at least.

A fiercely contested rivalry delivered another chapter Monday night as Jaslo found a late winner in the 86th minute to claim a 1-0 result.

The loss is an early-season blow. It also extends Steel City's search for a first victory in the series to seven all-time meetings.

But summer seasons aren't won in June.

There's plenty of soccer left to play, and Steel City doesn't have long to dwell on this one.

Attention now turns to Thursday night and the Illinois State Cup Round of 16. Joliet Memorial Stadium awaits.

Kickoff is 8PM as Steel City continues its quest to reverse the curse and become the first Joliet club to lift the State Cup since 1909.

Steel City boards the D’Arcy Cruiser for a top-of-the-table clash at Czarni Jaslo.

Jaslo has won all three of its matches this season, while Steel City has won two and tied one.

Two changes from the 1-1 draw with Jahbat FC last week – Nugent and Clayton slide into the XI.

Steel City is winless in six matches all-time with Jaslo. They’ve met three times in the Midwest Premier League, twice in the Illinois State Cup and once in the National Amateur Cup. Steel City scored one goal in each of those six matches while Jaslo netted fourteen.

*NOTE: Steel City’s Illinois State Cup second round match with Jagiellonia will be this Thursday, June 18th at Joliet Memorial Stadium at 8pm. It was pushed one week due to weather this past Thursday.

The last Joliet-based team to lift this cup did it in 1909.

Since then? Generations of players, clubs, and close calls have come and gone.

Last round, Steel City blasted Machu Picchu 5-0. But one good night doesn’t silence a century of history.

⚒️INTENSITY WEEK

A massive stretch has arrived.

Thursday night, the red-n-black continue the quest to become the first Joliet club to lift the Illinois State Cup since 1909.

Round of 16.
8pm kickoff.
Joliet Memorial Stadium.

Then Monday, Steel City heads to Bensonville for a top-of-the-table clash with Czarni Jaslo at Redmond Park. Few clubs have tested Steel City harder over the years than Jaslo.

First place will be on the line at 8:15pm.

Two matches. Five days.

The calendar turns heavy for Steel City FC.

Thursday night at venerable Joliet Memorial Stadium, Steel City hosts the Round of 16 in the Illinois State Cup.

Kickoff against Jagiellonia is set for 8 PM - and admission is free.

Then Monday, the road gets even steeper. Steel City travels to Redmond Park in Bensenville for a top-of-the-table clash with Czarni Jaslo. Jaslo has jumped to nine points atop the Midwest Premier League table. Steel City sits on seven after three matches. It will be the only match between the sides this season.

But first comes the Cup.

Steel City punched its ticket to the Round of 16 by dismantling Machu Picchu FC 5-0 in the opening round behind a Christian Baumgartner hat trick. The ghosts of Illinois soccer history still hang over this city. It’s been 107 years since a Joliet club lifted the Illinois State Cup.

For one of Illinois’ biggest and most soccer-mad cities, it’s almost unthinkable. Steel City is trying to rip that page out of the history books.

It’s a banner day for soccer all around. Catch Mexico kick off the World Cup at 2 PM — then head over to Joliet Memorial at night for knockout soccer under the old lights.
