Shireen Woodward Fit Life

Shireen Woodward Fit Life Personal trainer and weight loss coach, runner, wife, mom and grandma sharing my health and fitness journey and my traveling life as I move into my 50's.

Hoping to be one of those 80 year olds out there still running races! I am 56 years old and am a certified personal trainer, weight loss coach and fitness nutrition specialist. I learned to appreciate the mental health benefits of exercise several years ago when I helped some close family members go through severe physical and mental health struggles, which began taxing my own physical and mental

health. I learned that my own struggles became easier to handle on a day-to-day basis when I had some sort of daily exercise. Life just gets crazier (even without any kids at home!), but I am happiest when I’m exercising daily and eating right. I love to run--I've done 11 half marathons and 1 Ragnar relay--but have struggled with finding the right cross training to help keep injuries at bay. I love my job because it helps me focus on combining challenging workouts, expert nutrition and fun accountability all together in one package. I am amazed by the human body with its resilience and power to change and adapt. I am even more awed by the human spirit when I see people decide to change their fitness and eating habits. Each journey is personal and inspiring because it’s a really HARD road. I love being associated with people like that and am honored to be able to help motivate them to make these great changes. If you are one of those people who wants some company on your health and fitness journey, I would love to help you too!

6 weeks with my neck brace has flown by (or at least now that it’s over 😜) and today we went for a short hike that’s just 15 min from our house that has amazing views! It felt great to be able to be outside without it and it made me excited to do more hiking up in the mountains this summer! Maybe we’ll even try one of the easier 14’ers 💪🏼.

Joel is the best for supporting me in my drive to live an active life as we age. I can’t imagine my life without him, nor do I want to😉😍.

To any of you familiar with hikes in the CO mountains, I’m taking recommendations so we can plan out our summer weekends!

To the rest of you, what’s your favorite summertime activity in your home state?

Music is my favorite part about Christmas (along with watching Elf, of course 😉). And there are definitely certain songs that I love more than others, like the harmony of Away in a Manger and Angels We Have Heard on High.

But so help me if I have to hear Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer one more time this year, I can’t be held responsible for my actions 😜

I want to build a playlist of all time favorite versions of Christmas songs, so I’m asking you to help me out and share your fave rendition of a Christmas song so I can check it out!
Aaaaand...go!👇🏼

Today’s challenge is to shout out a health care worker, and I couldn’t let the day go by without thanking Marc Phillips () for his clinic’s dedicated care through the last nearly 2 years of injuries and shoulder surgeries. Having that kind of long term relationship with your PT isn’t always what people hope for 😜, but I’m so grateful that he and his team of therapists has been there for me! And even though I finally officially graduated from PT last month, he said I could still come hang out there sometimes if I want to 😁.

I truly am grateful for health care workers like Marc who have helped me through so much pain and discomfort on the long road to recovery!

And of course, this year has made me so very grateful for all the health care workers who have been putting themselves on the frontlines every day to help people deal with pain and suffering. When I went to the hospital the day my mom died last August, I saw a young CNA sitting and holding my mom’s hand so she wouldn’t have to feel alone. They truly are angels!

Which health care worker are you grateful for today? Be sure and tell them so!

“The bell still rings for all who truly believe”

There is a warm place in my heart for Christmas stories, and I love this thought from The Polar Express.

Today I want you to ask yourself if you truly believe in yourself. Do you believe in your ability to make a lasting change for a healthier life?

If the answer is yes, then great--that’s more than half the battle.

If, however, you find that the answer is no, then try breaking it down into tiny, more immediate steps, like this 👇🏼

🎄Do I believe I can change one thing, just for today?
🎄Can I get a workout done today (even if it's just 10 minutes)?
🎄Can I eat a healthy breakfast?
🎄Can I choose a healthy snack?
🎄Can I park farther away from the store so I get in some extra steps while I'm getting my shopping done?
🎄Can I drink an extra glass of water right now?
🎄Can I do 5 pushups while I'm watching my favorite Christmas movie?

You get the idea! Focus on one tiny part at a time, and your belief in yourself will grow with each small action you take. Pretty soon you’ll realize that you’re doing it for the long term! (And if you want more awesome suggestions, check out the book Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg!)

You know the old saying “find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life”? Turns out, it’s true…and I’ve hit the jackpot of joy!😏—Don’t get me wrong, I work hard. I make sacrifices and sometimes feel the stress of time management going haywire or being pulled in too many directions! But I also love what I do and I look forward to working every day! It doesn’t feel like work to me and brings me joy...and I don’t have to count down the hours to the weekend, or call in for sick days, or miss out on vacations.—I didn’t have to be interviewed for this job but if there was an ad for it, it would look something like this:
👉🏻willing to work on yourself first (body and mind)👉🏻become your best self, shine your light outward and then help others find their light as well👉🏻dream big (like scary big) and then don’t be afraid to put in the work and go after that dream👉🏻understand that nothing worth having ever comes easy. Know that there will be hard days, but regardless you will stay grounded in your purpose and vision and continue to show up because you ARE making a difference in the lives of those around you👉🏻as you advance your skills, you will pour that knowledge into others and help them create the freedom you’re creating/have created👉🏻no degree, certification, social media training, business experience, or specific clothing size or weight is required...just a strong work ethic👉🏻be available to work 5ish hours a week to start and more as your passion grows 🔥—Although I never applied for this job, had I seen this posting, I absolutely would have. Sure it would have been a scary leap of faith, but I would have done it anyway. 👊🏻—If you could put your dream job on paper, what would it look like? And if you’re not working it now, remember that it is out there, you just may have to be the one to CREATE it! 🙌🏻—I’d love to share more with you about what I do. This job that flexes with me, that helps provide for our family, that has made me my best self...reach out, gf. I’m an open book!

You feel me on this? Anyone else think the last 9 months have felt like 2 years? Though it seems soooo long ago, I vividly remember last March when I was on hold with United trying to get my husband a seat on a flight home from Germany before they stopped international travel and I had so much adrenaline flowing that I was physically shaking. For the next 2 weeks I had to fight off panic attacks on the daily and worried that life would never be the same.

The thought that got me through that first dark month of quarantine was “control the controllable.” I quickly realized that did NOT include the pandemic, nor did it include other people’s behaviors, so I told myself each day to just do what was in my power to do that day.

Through the rest of this year, I’ve gone up and down with remembering that mantra, especially with my eating habits, but with January around the corner and the hope of a new year in sight, I’m digging in to my inner who knows just what’s controllable and what isn’t!

So for the rest of the year, I’m fully committed to my daily workouts and locking down my nutrition (while still allowing for the occasional holiday treat—because I get to decide that!).

And come Jan 4, I’m going all in with ‘s newest workout program, 9 Week Control Freak. Come do this with me—it’s way more fun with friends! Drop your 🤷🏼‍♀️ below if you want more info about the program and let’s get psyched up together!

Being forced to stay close to home this year hasn’t been all bad as we were able to spend more time in our beautiful Colorado mountains.
Running and being in nature bring me peace as I feel closer to God and at the same time I can also take care of the body that I’ve been blessed with (injuries and all 😜). I am grateful every day for these incredible gifts!

What’s something that brings you peace?

Even though December and the Christmas season look different this year than they ever have before, there is still light in the world and a reason to celebrate!

Christmas lights, outside and in, are my favorite decorations and even though we aren’t over-the-top kind of outdoor lights folks, we still put them up so we can add to the light and cheer in our neighborhood. But inside, I put them pretty much everywhere 😜

When my kids were little, I made a service advent calendar with a chocolate and a service suggestion (like making their brother’s bed or helping dad with the dishes) for each day and they would take turns learning that service is sweet.

That’s why I love the movement every December too. If you go to comeuntochrist.org or text LIGHT to 71234 you can get daily suggestions to light someone else’s life, just like Christ was a light to the world when he was born.

What’s your favorite Christmas decoration and why?

True or false:
It really is possible to enjoy the holidays AND reach your health and fitness goals too!🤯😜

Before I became a coach 5 years ago, I’d been running my own health bet groups with friends, mostly to keep myself accountable, but I had no resources to offer people to help them get lasting results. As a personal trainer, I wasn’t allowed to give them any specific nutrition advice beyond “eat more veggies and stay away from sugar.” And daily accountability wasn’t even an option because as much as I loved it, I was a busy mom and didn’t have time to spend all day doing a job I wasn’t getting paid for.

In my monthly groups now, though I’m able to offer people the best resources I’ve found to help them make small, simple changes that will have a lasting effect on the rest of their lives (and their family’s lives too!). Because these are the not-so-secret ingredients:
❣️Drink more water
❣️Do short but effective workouts in 30 min or less
❣️Follow simple nutrition programs created by registered dietitians with meal plans and recipes to guide you
❣️Drink your daily dose of superfoods to boost your immune system and help with sugar cravings
❣️Learn that change is possible in any phase of life with daily accountability from a group of fun, supportive women

It’s as simple as that, even through the holidays! Enrollment for my Dumbbells & Jingle Bells bootcamp is now open and I’d love to have you join us as we work to make this the healthiest holiday season yet (while still being able to enjoy the occasional treat 😉)! Shoot me a message or fill out the link in my bio and I’ll send you allll the info!💃🏼🎅🏼🎄🎊

“Joy cometh in the morning” Psalm 30:5

Today I for mornings. I love getting up early and doing my daily morning routine because it sets a positive tone for the day ahead, bringing the power of possibility into every day.

Why is this so important to me? Because more than ever this year, I remember that life is a gift—you never know how much time you have left and I want to make sure I’m doing something every day that matters in at least some small way.

As I look ahead to the new year, I have hope in my heart for a return to a more normal life. A life where we won’t be afraid to hug and to touch the people we love. A life where there won’t be fear about traveling to see new places, only excitement. A life where personal health and safety won’t even be in my top 5 things to worry about.

These are the things I hold onto each morning, knowing that they will be there again one day and that this current crazy life we’re living is only temporary. And in the meantime, I will continue to take time every morning to breathe in the possibilities of the coming day.

We braved the cold for our run this morning and even though the first 2 miles were… uh… BRISK (and I was grateful for my buff that could double as both a mask and a chin warmer 😜), we warmed up for the last 2 miles and ended up feeling great!

I’m especially grateful to feel that my in November (today was day 28!) has helped me build up my running base and keep me motivated through the month! My hamstring feels better and I’m looking forward to increasing weekly miles through December. The human body is an amazing thing and I’m grateful for this gift!

What are you grateful for today?
