Pikes Peak Ascent & Marathon: date change from August to September for 2022!

DRUM ROLL, PLEASE...

New race dates for 2022!

Many of you guessed correctly, and our big announcement has to do with moving the dates for the Pikes Peak Marathon and Ascent. For the first time in its 67-year history, the races will be held after Labor Day, on September 17 and 18, 2022.

So why are we changing dates? We have a couple of reasons.

First, the conflict with the Leadville Trail 100 Run was a known issue, as was the general congestion in Manitou Springs area attractions and lodging during the summer.

Second, the region's weather is traditionally more stable in September than it is in August. Racers in recent years have been fighting through record-setting temperatures, especially in the Marathon. But, as any experienced mountain traveler (and 2018 Ascent racer) knows, August also has more sudden thunderstorms.

According to climate-data.org, the average high temperature is 5 degrees lower in September, and the region receives nearly 2 inches less precipitation compared to August.

Finally, the change takes the races out of peak tourism season in Manitou Springs, which should alleviate some traffic and lodging congestion, and area attractions will also likely be less crowded.

Registration for all Garden to Peak Challenge series races opens March 1, 2022. The dates for the 2022 series races are:

Garden of the Gods 10-Mile and 10k: June 12
Barr Trail Mountain Race: July 17
Pikes Peak Ascent: September 17
Pikes Peak Marathon: September 18

Hello runners!
The fall colors in the national forest behind Palmer Lake are in full display now! We are going to do a group trail run:
- This Saturday October 9th:
- 6:30am
- Meet at the Palmer Lake Reservoir Trail Head parking lot.
- Just under 12 miles out & back to Harrison Plane Crash. ~2,500 ft elevation gain. Expect 4 hours, give or take 30 minutes. The run will start and end at the trailhead.
- You can check out pics, course and reviews on AllTrails.
- The route is available publicly on my Strava profile if you want to download the GPX.

Optional coffee / breakfast after the run: location TBD (Serrano's, Black Forest Café & Deli, other?)
This is a social run, not a race. If there are 2 different levels/speeds of runners, we'll break up into 2 groups. No one will be left behind. If you can run the flats and downhills, and hike the uphills you can do this run. We'll wait at the tops of hills and intersections so nobody gets lost or runs alone.
If you're a hiker/walker, you are welcome to join us for the start and coffee/breakfast after, but you will want to bring a friend so you're not hiking alone. You may need to do a shorter route than the running groups if you want to meet up for coffee after.
